  • RL relationships from EQ encounters

I have heard stories of people who meet in EQ then actually progress to a romance in RL. In fact my Mother met her current partner in EQ five years ago, and now they have been living together happily for three years this January. I am so glad I introduced my Mother to EQ. I am happy for her romance and happy that we have an interactive way to stay in touch over such a long distance. I don't have my own romance story to tell but...I live in Quelious as Lascivette Sylvermynx and on Rallos Zek as Lascivious Ghayguy (that should answer any questions <grin>) and I am 33 and single. Do you have a romance story to tell? I would love to hear it <read it>, and I am sure others would as well. Good Journey everyone, and best of luck on the heart wrenching decision as to wether or not you should move to EQ2.

You may find The Daedalus Project of interest. It is a graduate student's ongoing research into various psychological issues of online gaming, including romantic relationships. In particular, the section entitled Romances That Began in a Far-Away Land is exactly this sort of thing.

I will say that I have been participating in the study from the beginning, including a narrative somewhere in there. But I shall decline to point out which one.

Thank you for that recommendation !!

Thank you for recommending the Daedalus Project! I have had great fun perusing the articles and even made a few posts of my own. I recommend the site to anyone who is interested or curious about online relationship development.

RL Relationship in EQ? Not here.. i dont think ever.. unless I would meet the person outside EQ first and found out we both played the game.. then go from there. At least then you have a picture in your mind of who you are REALLY talking to.
I know of at least 1 relationship that stemmed from EQ ... it ended up destroying 2 guilds. Wasn't pretty...

Met my husband in Blackburrow in 2000, < found my corpse for me hehe> a year of emails and phone calls, and like 4 state to state visits, then he moved in with me in 2002, we got married in December 2003.

Worked for us, strange how it happened but I dont look a gift fate in the mouth.... mixing my metaphors I know hehe

I have also participated in a number of online studies and grad student papers hehe.

I once had an EQ relationship (started out as role playing) almost break up my RL relationship. I'd rather not go into further details, however -- what's past is past, and best to stay there.

My husband and I were introduced by guildmates on 1/6/2000 (yes, I know exactly when we met ) and were married just over a year later.

My boyfriend and I met on EQ in the Kunark age... Four years ago. We were friends for two years, fell in love and have been dating for the last two years. We both were tackling our degrees (though at different levels) and didn't want to be rash... so he graduated this summer and will be moving here in a few months ^_^ In the meantime, there's been phone plans, emails, flights, and lots of EQ In fact, we started our cleric and shadowknight the day we started dating...

My husband and I actually met on a Muse, long before EQ. But we have made several real-life friends from EQ, some who live near us and who we see regularly, others further away that we don't get to see often. For me, online life and real world life mingle freely.

I met my husband through a local message board when I posted asking for information about the H.P. Lovecraft film festival. He sent me the URL, and we emailed a couple of times, then met at the festival. After it was over, he asked me out for another date, and it went on from there.

We've been married for 3 years now.

My EQ relationship isn't quite what you were asking about since instead of moving from EQ to RL, it moved from RL to EQ. My bf and I were together for a few years, then when I moved across the country I started to play EQ with him to continue our relationship long distance - and it has worked very well for us. I find it's also a good way to keep in touch with my bro - so much more fun than just emails and messenger chat to be able to head out and fight with him.

                            Don't know if this counts....

Met my fiance actually through a mutual friend - but she originally met him in meridian 59, then EQ, then in real life (he's from England, and comes stateside from time to time to see friends), and kept up with him though the game. After my divorce (and after the resulting months of shuddering at the thought of dating again) , she set us up during one of his trips out - said it was the perfect deal - if we didn't hit it off, he'd go back across the ocean, and I could sit in Kansas and never have to see him again. Ha! Turned out we hit it off real well, and wanted to keep in contact with each other. Well, a month after we met, I got in EQ, too, so I could keep up with him easier, and of course got addicted to the game. We've seen each other for week-long dates every two or three months since! We daydream of the day we can sit in the same room, and chat in real time while raiding with the guild, heh heh... Wow, how sad is that?

So, now we're engaged, and waiting on the U.S. Government go give him that magical little fiance visa so we can bring his butt over here, hee!

In general I keep my RL relationships and my EQ relationships separate.
