  • The good with the bad

Good day everyone. First, I will start off with the good. It's my birthday. I am 34 today, and the proud father of 2 childern, with a 3rd on the way.

That brings us to the bad.

My wife is currently 21-22 weeks prego. At 19 weeks we had an unltrasound done. The baby will be a boy. They looked at her cervix, and noticed it was opening from the inside, and was getting shorter. Not a good thing. We followed up the last 2 weeks with subsequent ultasound to check on the cervix. The one done this last friday, was not a bearer of good news. Her cervix was down to half a centimeter thick, should be 4 -5 cm thick, and she was between 2 -3 cm dialated.

They had to do an amniocentesis(sp) to see if there was an infection in there, and if there was, they would have had to induce the labor the rest of the way. Fortunately, there was not one. She was admited to the hospital, and given anti-contraction drugs to help try to shrink the cervix, and was put in bed at an angle with her feet up, so that the membranes would go back into the womb. Everything did as it was supposed to, and they did a procedure called a rescue surclage(sp), which is where they put in a stitch to sew the cervix shut.

She was released from the hospital yesterday, and for now, it is holding, and she is now at gome on strict bedrest. She can get up to go to the couch and bathroom, and that is it. The downside is that the stitch can fail. We are hoping that it doesn't.

If you are religious, or just pray for other people, would you mind adding her to your prayers? Her name is Joan.

    Thanks.

Of course I'll pray for her and the baby.

Thank you all for your well wishes and prayers.

Now if I can only convince her try at least give EQ a try while she is bed-ridden for the next 4 months.

                    Just a little update…

Yesterday, Joan went in to have her bi-weekly ultrasound to see how her cervix is doing. After the cerclage, it was measuring 1 cm above the stitch, and 2.4 cm below it. Last night, when they checked it, the top part was gone and the amniotic sac was down at the stitch, and the bottom was measuring 1.7 cm. They are having her go in again next week, instead of in 2, to see if there is any more change. They are hoping that there is not any significant change in the cervix at that time. If there is not, they will decide whether to see her in 1 week or 2. If there is a significant change in it, they most likely will wind up admitting her to the hospital and give her steroids to help develop the baby’s lungs. I will keep you posted if anything happens.

When I was pregnant, for no reason what so ever it seemed, with 2 months cooking time left, my baby boy decided he wanted to come out. It ended up being a week in hospital for me while they gave me stuff to stop the contractions and like you mentioned, steroids for baby's lungs. I swear that stuff made me feel worse than the actual labour pains. But, in the end it was enough to give him the kick start he was missing so to speak. Even two months premature he had no real problems apart from being teeny and kinda yellow from jaundice ( which goes away with a few days under the lights in the humidicrib ).

Anywho, I do have a point! And that is, these days, they are so amazing with premmies and natal care. There were babies in the ward we were in you would of thought how could something so tiny be ok, but they were. Best wishes and be brave.

                          Another update...

Joan had another ultrasound yesterday, and there is a bit
more change in the pre-term labor situation, but not
enough to admit me to the hospital. The stitches that
were placed on November 1st, are holding and doing
                          their job so far.

They are, however, going to start steroid shots to
boost the development of the baby's lungs and brain
cells. It appears that Joan will not go full term, and
they are hoping to get her to at least 32 weeks before
this little guy makes an entrance. (She will be 28
weeks along as of Thursday, 12/18). At this point the
main concerns of pre-term birth are lung development
                          and brain "bleeds"...

So, back on bedrest I go, with short jaunts to the
                          hospital for shots....

We will just have to keep our fingers crossed for next
weeks visit, and that everything stays the same for at
                          least 4 more weeks!!!

i was 3 weeks early myself and have had no problems other then an older bother. (yes that was spelled right though i'm sure i was his younger bother too. ) good luck and 4 weeks early shouldn't cause much if any problems.

Umm.. IF she makes it to 32 weeks, thats 8 weeks early, but if things keep progressing the way they have been, I'm thinking a new years baby, or there abouts, which would be about 10 weeks early. 2 1/2 months early, that makes for a tiny baby, which would be stuck in the NICU for a while.
