  • Any other MMORPG's folk played

Anyone played any other MMORPG's they have enjoyed?
I played Jumpgate which was pretty good, a Space game a bit like Elite. I was really looking forward to its successor, EVE Online but found it 90% hype 10% content.
Also, I played a few MUDs. Anyone remember 'Dutch Mountains' or 'Nanvaent'? Think Nan is still going strong. BTW, EQ is a MUD with grahpics.

You’ve seen my post about Horizons, which comes out next month. It looks promising, but I’ll reserve judgment until I’ve had a chance to play it for a while. World of Warcraft also looks good, but its not due out for a while. The only other online RPG I’ve played is UO. I enjoyed it for about a year and a half. Like EQ, it’s undergone a lot of changes over the last couple of years or so. It might be worth taking a look at if you want to explore a well-established game world.

I used to play MUD, MUSH, DIKU, MOO, MESH, etc..

      They were great.

Avatar was the main MUD I played back in 93-96, there was another that I played while I was in UMaine, but I forgot the name (92-93).

      Nothing graphical, though.
      Draggar De'Vir
      92 Assassin - Povar

      Xzorsh
57 Druid of Tunare - Povar
47 Druid of Tunare - Lockjaw

Hark! Who is that, prowling along the fields! It is Draggar De'VIr, hands clutching two hardened pitas! He cries gutterally: "In the name of Thor the Mighty, I hereby void your warranty, and send you back to God!!!"

I played Jumpgate for a short period and was a member of the squad =Foundation=. It gave me a taste for mmorpgs which is why I jumped at the chance to play EQ. Tried Asherons Call but found it a bit naff gfx-wise. I love EQ- absolutely hooked. Now trying to get a 'relaxed' guild together since I've met some awsome people playing on Stromm (we seem to have a nice synergy when we group).

I messed around with the offline trial of Jumpgate, but the learning curve for piloting controls was just too steep to keep my interest at the time.

If you feel like another space MMORPG, there's Earth & Beyond by EA (formerly Westwood). Its a LOT different than Jumpgate (about the only similarities are that they're set in space, you can kill things, people can mine things, and there are stations where you can dock). It has a progressive storyline, and generally some degree of new or revamped (free) content monthly. They also have very short term (2-7 days) events/quests around holidays (mostly Christian holidays). That I can think of, they've done Halloween, Christmas, Easter (that was month-long), Valentine's Day, and E&B's 1-year anniversary.

As a *very* casual player of it, I enjoy the game mostly for the storyline & quest aspects (new quests in every storyline patch, and usually some in non-storyline patchs as well). If you're more hardcore in things, you'll probably burn through the content and max level relatively fast (getting to 150 OL in E&B is probably significantly easier than untwinked/unPLed to lvl 60 in EQ). Also, the average player of E&B seems to be, uh, a bit less "mature" than the average EQ player.
