  • Points System - How it works

Someone asked me how it worked in the channel last night, and I suggested I posted it here in the forums to make it easier to explain to the hordes of people still confused by it.
If this is in the wrong forum - feel free to move it.

As you can see, I have earned a total of 153pts in Miragul`s, and 51 in each Takish & Rujarkian. I have earned none in Mistmoore or Deepest Guk. I have spent some of those points, giving me 135 points avaliable for spending.

I can only buy items from a certain theme, costing the same as, or below the total amount I have earned there.

Taking the picture, I am currently at Ruj. I can buy the Orc's Earthen Belt (40pts) but not the Dusty Old Coin (52pts). If I wanted to I could buy the belt and the Orc-Tooth Necklace (40pts) since the total earned stat doesnt change when you spend points.

You can usually see a few items just out of reach of your current total points at a camp, to wet your appetite for what you can get next.

So, how come the spells at the top of the list are highlighted as if they are available, even though you don't have the 60 points for them in Ruj? Is it safe to assume that the "...." under the theme column means that they are available at all WFB camps, or at least that they are exempt from the point restrictions system?

Those are generic spells, available at all camps, you only need the number of points necessay to buy them.

        Great information!

I knew points were specific to each dungeon, but wasn't aware that there were "shared" items, like spells.

Some more information - this time a little on earning points.

It appears that when you finish the adventure (whether before or after the time limit has expired), three point totals are calculated. The first is the general point total for the group. Then whoever is the highest level in the group (can be more than one person if they're at the same level) gets an additional point. Whoever is the lowest level in the group loses a point (once again, it can be more than one person) - with a minimum points earned of 1.

I'm still curious about the formula they're using to calculate the general character points for the group, however. It seems to be seriously depressed before 65 (possibly 60). My high 50's group last night got 20 points per person for completing a job. Boost that by 10 levels, and you're looking at 30 additional points (plus 1 extra for all the 65s, since 65 is as high as you can go level-wise).

My chanter in a mid-20's group got half a level of experience and one point (he wasn't the lowest level character in the group, either).

Typically on a successful adventure you'd expect 51 points if you're level 65, about 17-19 if you're level 55, and 8 if you're level 45. Under level 30 you'd get just 1 point for a successful adventure. It depends on what group you're with though... if you're grouped with a bunch of lower level people then you'll get a slightly easier dungeon and it will be worth less points.

If you finish in overtime you can expect 13 points at level 65, and it drops off fast... 11 points at 62... 4 or 7 points at 59... 1 point at 45... 0 points at 41. Yes, zero... you can actually get a message 'congratulations, you have earned zero points'.

About the shared items that appear on every merchant... those seem to be the charms that cost 6 points or less and the trap spells. I haven't noticed any other shared items.

Maybe I'm a bit slow, but I'm not understanding how you can spend 80 points if you've only earned 51 for the particular theme.

You can spend any and all points you gained, over all themes, on one particular theme if you so desire. The roof to the item price you can buy, however, is set by the amount of points earned in that particular theme.

If you have 2000 points, of which 100 gained in theme A, you could purchase up to 20 different items worth 100 points in theme A, but any items at 101 points and higher are not available.

If you have gained 1000 points in theme A instead, you could buy up to two items worth 1000 points max, but you would be unable to buy one that costs 1001 points, even though you have 2000 to spend.

Ah, ok, I see now. What is available for purchase depends on how many points you've earned in that theme. However, points spent in any theme, regardless of where they were earned.

                  Thank you for the clarification

Actually, things that are zone specific (have a theme code next to them in the purchase menu) require that number of points from that theme. The items with global theme (marked as ---) can be spent from any dungeon's points. This is why those items in the picture above labelled Ruj and are 52 and 60 points are greyed out. He only has 51 Ruj points available. The top 60 point spells are highlighted (brighter white text) and available to purchase because they are global items and he has more then 60 global points available.

Thanks for posting that. I never before saw that little check box in the lower left that said show only the stuff I can use. That's going to be helpful.

I used my first 6 points to "buy" my a charm. It's my very first one. Woohoo.

Since there still seems to be a little confusion about this...

Say I earn 500 points in Guk and 200 points in TH. My totals are...

                        Total 700
                        Guk 500
                        TH 200

I buy one 300 point item in Guk. Totals are now...

                        Total 400
                        Guk 500
                        TH 200

I earn 250 points in TH. My totals are now...

                        Total 650
                        Guk 500
                        TH 450

I try to buy a 500 point item in TH... Except that I can't, because I've only earned 450 points in TH.

                        Hope the above makes sense.

Lets try to simplify this a bit.

There are some simple rules that will help you determine what you can purchase and what you cannot.

Rule 1: You may only purchase an item in a theme if you have earned enough points in that theme to purchase the item.

Rule 2: Faction points may be spent in any theme so long as Rule 1 is met, regardless of where they were earned.

So, if I have earned 500 points in Guk, I can purchase any number of items costing 500 points or less from Guk regardless of where the points were earned. I may not purchase any item costing more than 500 points in Guk.

In the example provided by Eumerin, he cannot purchase a 500 point item from TH, because he hasn't earned enough points in TH, but he could purchase a second 500 point item from Guk since he has 650 points available.

So basically what it boils down to is:

If you want the good stuff, stick to one area till youre blue in the face. Once you hit the magic max number of 1492, then you can move to the next place.

The next logical question would be, "Which theme has the best purchasable items for me / my guild / my brother's best friend's next-door neighbor?"

The best answer I've found is at the Safehouse. They have the biggest list I've seen of items sold by the adventure merchants. You can find it here:
