• Sinatures... question for denmum or house ogre..

one thing you didn't mention in the signature faq.. just currious.. does this new board allow the use of javascript? for perhaps a dhtml effect?

Eg: links that when passed over with the mouse, pop up related text into a second table cell to the side of the first?

It's something i'll have to toy around with, and if not.. i guess i'll just have to do it with flash.. but not everyone can view flash..

If I may have an opnion here please.

As much as I love seeing new and interesting things that this creative lot comes up with I don't want to see any of the JScript, Javascript (yes theres a difference), DHTML, or Java used in Sigs or in posts.

Heres why.

A) If the code is not correct you can crash others browsers and computers.

B) Not all browsers are able to handel all the same things the same way.

C) It can make things hard on the other users to read or use the board.

I have used all of the above and some to good effect and others to not so good effect. I dont mine creativity. I dont mind bad*** development. But there are alot of people that I feel that would stop comming here if cause a few people had incompatable code.

As I said I am not opposed to it but there are alot of things to bring into consideration before doing these things.

I defenitely do **NOT** have any plans to allow the script tag on these boards.

Sorry for the people that want to ue the various functions. I will also not enable <? for XML. I am not as familiar with DHTML but I also do not plan on enabling those tags.

So basically, only images and some basic HTML.

I don't blame you at all for that.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>

Thats what you are talking about the encoding call.

ok.. just as an informational bit.. DHTML doesn't have tags.. it's just clever combinations of javascript, html, and stylesheets.. and I can understand why it's not allowed.. just wasn't sure if it was allowed or not.

I do understand the earlier comment about compatibility.. unfortunately no two browsers support javascript the same way. it takes carefull programming to keep it compatible with all browsers.. and not everyone wants to go into that much depth for a simple signature..

As such.. if I am to do what I would like to do for my sig, I guess I'm gonna have to do flash.. and hope not too many ppl are put out for viewing my sig.. for those who's browsers don't support it, it won't mess anything up.. you'll just not see any sig.. ah well.

cant use the embed tag either or object tags not by default anyways for phpBB

I think the only tags that are turned on by default are <pre, <p, <div,<span, <a and <b I might have missed one or two been a while since I looked at my config for phpBB since I have HTML disabled the phpbb code works fine and as long as you have a few of the mods in you can do some decent sigs with it, like glow fade and scolling of text
There is a Search feature so use it!

While flash applications can be an effective presentation, is it really necessary in a SIGNATURE? We all like it when the boards load fast (fact we whine at the DenMom and House Ogre when they're slow) ... so let's keep the signatures simple, eh? As a courtesy to the other users here?

Please no shockwave/flash sigs.

I upgraded my computer so its not a huge thing now, but with my older one feeling laggy and noticing that in wintop 80 percent of my CPU was being used in animating a couple shockwave sigs on some messageboard is kind of irritating.

I feel the same way about shockwave ads. Evidently IE is a tool of "the man" or something because I think you should be able to disable shockwave/flash site by site, or temporarily altogether.
