  • Suggestion for the Brewing Page

There have been some questions about the "Corking Device" being returned after a combine. And having taken a look at the current Recipes page, it is not very clear that the Corking Device is returned.

Maybe adding a quick sentance above the Non-Alcholic Table Recipes stating that the Corking Device is returned Success -or- Failure would help.

Since the Corking Device requires a Blue Diamond to make, folks are understandbly concerned about it's loss. The "loss" of Bottles, Corks, etc isn't that much of a heartache.

I have to disagree with this. If you’ve done any trades you should know that 98% of all “tools” used in any recipe are returned. (i.e. Files returned for smithing, needles for tailoring, sculpting tools for pottery, etc.) In brewing the “tool” falls into the container category. In other words if you fail making a Mino Hero Brew you receive the cask back since that’s what the brew would have went into if you had failed. If there is a recipe where you lose the “tool” Denmom has pointed that out in the recipe. Take a look at the Demi-Sec Champagne recipe for an example. Currently there are only 5 recipes that use the corking device; Kaladim Constitutional, Innothule Triple Bile, Grobb Liquidised Meat, Fizzy Odus Juice and the trophy. Out of the 5 of those only the trophy eats your corking device (I haven’t made all those drinks so if I’m wrong feel free to flame me) and on the trophy page it says:

note that on failure, you lose all ingredients. Success returns only the trophy

So the only thing that needs to be done is people need to read the recipes.

I've got to agree with Kraz on this one...I've had a lot of people ask me if it's returned, and for quite a while I didn't know if it really was or not. It's not very clear that it is.

Same with baking. I assumed that tools that were returned were listed in the oven/spit/mixing bowl column, but that doesn't seem to always be the case. Would be nice to see that fixed also, time permitting.

        No flames...

And yes, I have done lots of tradeskills. I have a corking device, my brewing is pegged at 200 (pottery at 213). I have made the drinks.

BUT... I have seen a thread or two asking specifically about the Corking Device. And the reason they ask, is because it is one of the MOST EXPENSIVE tools. And the recipe page doesn't state this clearly.

And if you look at the recipes requiring a corking device, listed under 'container' it also lists under container 'cork'. And if I am not mistaken, the cork is lost, regardless of success or failure.

Now, if you want another example where there is an exception. Look at Making a Shaped or Carved Bow. There is a "planing tool" or "whittling blade" required. It is Consumed on Success... but returned on failure. I know, I saw it happen when I made one. Weird I say. Why would the planing tool be broken when making a bow? And why ONLY on success?

There are lots of oddities in the game and the recipes.

I make the request JUST because the way it is written isn't clear. And folks bring up the question time and again in the brewing section. Adding in a simple statement for the EXPENSIVE item, would help. Why should it be left to the imagination?

Now, when the Database version comes on line, this question will be moot. Since the recipes list what is returned on success and failure. How do I know this? Because I have been helping to enter these exact recipes.

Not a flame Kraz. The "you" refers to anyone who's done tradeskills at all. All I'm saying is if there is an expensive or PITA tool to get and there is a chance to lose it DM and the people here have pointed it out (Usually in big bold letters). So when I see corking device as a component I assume I'll get it back unless its been noted otherwise. But then maybe I've just hung around here to much and take some things for granted.

Unfortunately, there ARE enough folks out there that don't know that such things are returned. Smiths are used to getting their tools back, bakers are used to getting their tools back, but brewers that don't cross-skill are used to watching bottles, casks, shotglasses, etc. get swallowed up by the brew barrel.

So, at the top of the nondrinkable brewing section of the brewing recipes page ...

(note: corking device is returned on success or failure for all drink combines that require its use)

I assume the same thing too, but folks who haven't lived at EQTC for 4 years may not make that intuitive leap. And if I'm burning a BD, I'd like to have more to go on than "I think. I'm fairly sure, but no one's said one way or the other"

I think a quick note stating that the tool is returned on success & failure, on those recipes (or in the recpie for making the tool, even, with the caveat that the GM trophy does NOT return it)

OTOH, I also know Niami's been slowly going insane trying to manage the ever growing EQTC, so it's not a big huge deal to me

Edit: Must type faster Yay Niami, thanks

edit2: and in a sign of just how much my job makes my head hurt, I kept mispelling Niami's name :/ eesh.
