Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 25140 bytes) in /home/virtual/site3/fst/var/www/html/phpBB2/common.php on line 119

    and the like.

I gotta admit, I've not been feeling the love lately.

If you take a look at the front page of the main site, you'll find I'm not feeling the love either.

Really, really, massively frustrated and tired of it all, and still don't have a straight answer as to what's causing the excessive outages. I'll provide updates as I know more, but if you hear this very loud scream coming from north of San Diego, you'll know I've lost the fight to stay calm....

      Load Issues

If I am not mistaken EQBeastlord just switched to this software as well. It sure looks like the same software to me.

You might want to check with them to see how they are handling the load issues.

Just my feeble attempt to help.

The mountain bike club I am in uses yaBB. The look is very similar. You can check it out at http://www.yabbforum.com, or to see it in use at http://www.joinomba.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi. Just an option if the problem lies in the software.

          Apparently, our current problems are due to some other site that's hosted on the same machine as our message board. {tries to not hit her head on the desk too many times}

We'll give them a bit of time to address the problem, and then see if the problems persist.

            Niami,

On the main page of the website, you have a parenthetical comment expressing some doubts about phpBB software.

For what it's worth, and possibly to put your mind at ease about the software itself, the phpBB.com forum (support, etc forum) has the following stats as of just a couple of minutes ago (random, non-peak number):

Our users have posted a total of 382944 articles
            We have 43647 registered users

In total there are 88 users online :: 13 Registered, 3 Hidden and 72 Guests
Most users ever online was 327 on Thu Apr 04, 2002 9:16 am
and they have 17 active public forums, which isn't too far away from the EQTraders mark.

I've encountered phpBB boards that have far more forums and concurrent users, but the SQL server is fairly beefy (and few changes are happening on the back end).

From my experience with phpBB, the first bottleneck is always the SQL server.

It seems that our problems are simply growing pains with the provider.

              Definitely the servers

Oh it's definitely the machines and not the software. phpBB, while I'm not overly fond of it, is fairly robust. From what I'm reading though and the error messages it's kicking back, it sounds like they didn't allocate enough memory for their mysql server in the config file, or they have it on a partition that has run out of space.

Changing the memory settings and reducing the logging level may fix all your problems.

Suposedly some other website on the same serve also had boards, (was not told what board system they are using) and it keeps eating the SQL server. They are moving that other website.

I believe that they have by now, and we can see how it goes for a bit.

Well as I compulsively checked the boards this morning, it's the first morning all week I haven't gotten at least one connection denied or time out.

                  I'm happy for now!

Hey DenMom, remember me? We talked in Email about moving boards.

Brell Serilis and Brell Rants also moved to racknine.com recently, (now to be found at http://www.brellrants.net too) figuring what the hell, it's good enough for EQTC, it should work for us.

Our server reliably screws into the ground every patch day as the server can't handle the spike in activity, and there has been at least one service interruption (lasting anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes) every blessed day.

We've had enough of it and I'm seeking a new host for our boards. If you're having this many problems, maybe you can come with us.

We're currently reprogramming phpbb to accept multiple boards with a single user table. Which means the Brell Boards, EQTC, and any other boards who want to come to our eventual home will be able to share a single userbase. Neat, huh?

On updating a post in the RN forums, I got the same sort of warnings that Wyrdlan did, but my post was updated just fine.

PHPbb updated to 2.0.4, might want to do it. You can also make changes to the way PHPbb behaves without changing the server. Email me for thoughts on this if you want.
