This new messageboard software keeps marking stuff as read!

About 3 times a week I will visit the EQTC web boards and find that everything has been marked read. Doesn't happen every time, but often enough to make it quite annoying.

Never had this happen with EZBoards.

Unfortunately, the plain vanilla version of phpbb tracks your "read" status based on your last visit to the boards via cookie ... so once you hit the boards and read a post in a forum, it believes that you've read everything *else* from before your visit.

Unfortunately, the current "mod" to make it track the read status of every single individual post for every single user was far too database-intensive, and brought these boards to their knees. Until someone comes up with a mod that works for the massive post volume that these boards get, we're "stuck" with having to go into each and every forum, and check topics via datestamp. For someone like me, who has to process "chunks" of posts at a time, as time permits, for stuff that needs to go onto the site, it's very much a nightmare, and increases the time that I need to spend wading through posts, as I have to manually double-check a lot of forums for new content.

It means a lot more stuff is falling through the cracks, and that my processing speed, and my availabilty to "chat", much less play, have gone out the window, but given the massive price difference between these boards and ad-free EZBoards for high-volume forums, we didn't have much choice if we wanted to keep the forums ad free.
