  • Post count increaser posts

    As you explained to folks over in the Baking Forum, Niami, the posts which have no content and serve only to increase one's post count translate to increased cost to run the board.

    It also lessens the value of the board over all. The resource we have here is excellent, mostly due to Niami and Ngreth's hard work in keeping it that way. Folks come here for tradeskill information, not wading through posts with no content looking for the real stuff.

    Perhaps removing the Number of Posts display, like on the old EZBoard, would help?

    I'll poke around with the message board configuration and see what I can do. I suspect you're on the right track, and folks find that post count listing to be taunting them.

      Yes, get rid of # of posts stat

      I have really never seen a "post count" statistic as being very valuble, for this very reason... while it's nice for a dedicated community member to get some recognition, in general it seems to appeal more to the "powergamer" who will comment on everythign just to increase post stats.

      I vote with getting rid of it, if possible.

        I can't find a spot to toggle it off. Will keep looking. {gibber}

          There is no control to turn off number of posts in the Admin menu.
          It would need to be a modification to the boards.

          I run a phpBB myself for our guild and hadn't considered turning 'em off, but that brings a good question. I'll check around the phpBB community and see if anyone has already done a mod for it.

            in viewtopic.php, if you delete this line

            $poster_posts = ( $postrow[$i]['user_id'] != ANONYMOUS ) ? $lang['Posts'] . ': ' . $postrow[$i]['user_posts'] : '';
            , about 2/3 of the way down, it should stop showing the amount of posts when you read a post. It will still keep track of it, but won't display in the most common place you see it.... It'll also save a *teeny tiny* bit of bandwidth. (:

            If you don't want to delete it, just in case, just throw a // in front of the line to comment it out.

                Was a good move to turn it off. It's one thing to have it on a server board, but another in a community that supports each other. No need to be competitive.

                  All jokes about Postcount inflaction aside, I was kind of fond of this feature.

                  It was fun making posts, welcoming people, answering questions, ranting in Primal scream, and then looking on in amazement to see that the number has jumped.

                  I will miss it, but I see why suppose you had to get rid of it to prevent people from posting just to see the number rise. Posts = Bandwidth = Money.
