    For those of you that have been around on the site for a while, you know that we've been one of the last holdouts with regards to fan sites and advertising. It took us a few years to even break down and ask for donations. For those who don't know how stubborn I've been about it, this will likely seem like much ado about nothing. {grins}

However, times have changed, traffic patterns have seriously changed, and donations are sporadic. Please, don't get me wrong. There are some wonderful folks who've donated to the site (in some cases, I suspect they donated more than they *should* have afforded on fixed incomes and the like). There have been others who simply can't donate, for one reason or another. We cherish you all, and have NO intentions of going to subscriber-restricted content or anything silly like that. We still strongly believe that everyone has the right to the full range of tradeskill information free of charge.

We've carried the site along through times of generosity, and times of several-month dry spells, but it's time to admit we can't do that on donations alone anymore, especially now that we're running the second site for EQ2. So, starting tomorrow (or today, depending on what time it is where you are), we're going to be ... {calls for a small drumroll} ... adding Google banner ads to the site. These will be topic-targeted, so you might get some interesting links now and then, especially now that we've blocked the worst offenders of those selling plat, accounts, etc. (The ads have been running over on EQ2 Traders Corner as a test for a bit now, and we used them to test out the feature, and to catch a lot of the advertisers we wanted to block.) They'll not always have anything to do with EQ, but they'll have some context in relation to the subject involved.

Those who hate them can ignore them. They're just banner ads after all, not popups, and pretty much everywhere you hit these days has ads of one sort or another. Those who tolerate them may find some interesting links to check out, now and again, and in the process contribute a small amount towards the running of EQTC and EQ2TC.

We do NOT want folks to just start a clicking frenzy for the sake of clicking. Among other things, that's a violation of our contract with Google to ask you to do so. Just know that they're there, and that we're not "selling out" by adding them to the sites, but rather trying to prevent the need to sell out due to costs growing faster than income.

Personally, I can't wait to see what sorts of interesting things it comes up with when confronted with some of our forums such as "Spell Research", for example. I suspect it will be everything from spelling aids, to New Age links, to market research.

I bet Prozac ads will pop up for all the Aid Grimel posts.

(scene of a ranger bow-plinking obsidianwood spiders in Plane of Fire)
"Have the treasures you've been seeking not been dropping?"

(scene of a ranger with a pile of othmir corpses in Cobalt Scar)
"Feeling guilty because you can't achieve without hurting others?"

(scene of a ranger bouncing around the camps in Hallowshade Moor)
"Life is full of stress, and it's perfectly normal that some people can't handle it."

(scene of a ranger buying endless stacks of Mnotaur Hero Brew supplies in AkAnon)
"For people like you, there's Prozac. We can't help you reach your life's goals, but we can help you feel better while you do it."

(scene of a ranger beating the stuffing out of the loom in PoK)
"Side effects may include depression, anxiety, violent outbursts, and fits of rage. Consult your doctor before using Prozac."

      Nope.

      ..... Harry Potter.

Soon we'll get posts in all kinds of forums (including pottery, tinkering, and the server specific boards) asking about "OMG I can really "make" Harry Potter spellz?????" except in far worse teen-net-speak than I'm capable of stomaching right now.

Well, I guess it makes me sad, but being one of those people on a "fixed" (read: no) income, it really bothers me that there's nothing I can do to offset it.

I guess it's far better to keep a good boat afloat doing whatever you need to.

You really shouldn't feel bad. I think it is a good idea. Adds, unlike pop-ups, aren't hard to ignore. And I think you are absolutely correct about occasionally finding something that catches the eye and leads to enlightenment - or at least a nice little diversion. It will indeed be fun to see what comes along.

Seeing the ads that appeared on the banner did not upset me. They seemed appropriate for content of the site, and I am glad you did the extra effort to make sure ones that would upset me (and others) are properly banned.

I haven't donated as much as I would like over the years, especially with what your site has given me. I am glad you understand those in finacially tight situations, who try their best to make ends meet, but at the same time are willing to do what little they can to make the internet a better place.

Thank you for keeping up the good work.

I wholeheartedly support your decision. I'm surprised you didn't do it before.

You have provided us with an invaluable service and saved us all many hours of time and frustration, not to mention entertaining us.

You deserve to get a little back from all your hard work. I hope you get enough clicks for a nice vacation (retirement even) on top of covering expenses.

Denmom, ogre, after all you've done for us, ads are nothing :P

You could send us all donation gnomes to hump our legs or something horrible like that and I'd still say it was worth it. :P

I really dont mind the ads as long as they dont evolve into some of the javascript monsters that cause effects accross the entire screen. If they stay in their assigned space, I sure can live 'em

/hug EQTraders Staff - good job all.

Curious how much bandwidth do you use in a month?

200-250 Gigs of bandwidth (most "cheap" sites are 10gigs then 5$ per gig after..., we have a better deal) to break even we need to make about $170 a month. This asumes the EQ2 site does not significantly increase bandwidth.

just the ads on EQ2 Traders was not enough. We will see how it goes with these added we may still be beggin for donations on top of the ads.

I don't really mind the adds for plat sellers but you seem interested in removing them so I thought I would let you know.

                          There was an add for

                          http://belrion.com/

up today. They are a plat seller and by the looks of the page it's another front for *************s.

Just noticed that one as well. Here are the details that shows up on EQ Traders.

                            Everquest Platinum Shop
Only $66 per 100K Instant Delivery 24/7 - We will Match any Price

I will admit that the keyboard add looks rather cool. I spent some time checking that site out.
