  • Is it just me? (bbs images)

I think the lastest update from microsoft broke something on my browser. At least on this page it did. I'm not loading any of the images. All of the buttons, emoticons, and other images are all just the white box with red X in the middle.

Very annoying. Any ideas on how I fix it?

During periods of high usage, I'm also getting lots of images not loading. I've just been assuming that the server and/or bandwidth is reaching its limit. Reloading the page or trying again later usually works, but most of the time I can navigate without images.

Hey, just found out something new. When I went to the uninstall software section and clicked on IE6, it gave me the option to "repair" the program. So I figured why not? It went through and scaned the program files to make sure no files were missing or corrupted, and then rebooted system. And now the webpage is working again.

Its a matter of cache refreshing. Because the graphics werene't available to you when you first hit the site, they remain unavailable until you specifically request them or reenter the site. Handling graphics in this manner is more efficient from the the web-authors point of view since it will dramatically reduce bandwidth. Why resend the same images that are already on your computer? However, this has to be carefully balanced with the need to able to change the content of an image and allow users to get that new content.

In IE 5.5 you can force a refresh of a single in-line image by right-clicking on the red X and selecting "SHOW PICTURE".

Since not all websites put the image size in their page code (html, etc) this can affect the layout of page if the images dont load. IE 5.5 has options for fixing this - Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, (under MultiMedia) Show Image Download Placeholders
Turning this on will force a frame to appear in the correct location and size of the image. This will keep the page displaying the way the author intended even if you dont' get all the images.
