The Tanaan Brew Barrel isnt required.... is it?

I went to a lot of zones, but I am pretty sure I made mine in Crescent Reach.

You don't have to crush anything, just combine the five ingredients in a brew barrel. Sometimes in the in-game books go into more details about the process than you actually follow, for flavor. (Personally I prefer an olive to add flavor to my drinks.)

Oddly, neither Nostrum shows up in a /buyer window search. I thought that might be because nobody had made it yet on my server, so I made one, but it still doesn't appear.
