The yeild was also interesting, I had 7 Chunks of Taelosian Rock and these are how the combines went:

Also, instead of the normal color skill message (mine being yellow), I had a blue message, possibly indicating a different way of combining things. The NPC text from Imildu Woodstreak suggests that (maybe) if you do enough combines, you become better at them and (at a guess) yield more from the combine.
