If you open the blade, the subcombines have the little [+] under them. But it stops opening up on hilt and nothing on pommel.

I know the subcombines are 'easy', that's not the point. Is there a limit on how many expandable [+] there are per page?

Not really a limit... just that if the sub-combine is listed previously in the tree, it is not re-listed again. This was done to limit the database activity and speed up the retrieval.
