I remember back on the old boards there was a forum for price reporting. In that old forum, someone posted how merchant greed works. He had figured out how a merchant gets greedy as time goes on. It was something like everytime you bought something it counted for -5 points and everytime you sold something it counted for +1 points (I'm sure I have the numbers wrong). So if a merchant buys a lot of stuff, their internal counter goes very high and they become greedy. By buying stuff from the vendor you could make him normal again. Anyone remember the formula?

    Interesting

Very interesting theory. Unfortunately, it is not true. Your items will sell to most merchants with enough charisma for exactly the same amount. Some merchants have a worse sellback ratio (ie the chicks outside halas), but it's not because they buy a lot of crap. They will have the same ratio no matter how much crap they buy. Their buy rate is always the same, even though its worse than most vendors. Some vendors that have the best buy rate are: Every merchant in plane of knowledge, Every merchant inside city walls, etc. so far the only merchants I've noticed with bad ratios are those out near the battle fields.

I'm not sure exactly what the max cha is but its about 105-125... somewhere in there. Get yerself a gm trophy and yer pretty much set.

I actually remember what he is talking about, I think. It used to be that if you sold enough of the same item to a vendor the price he paid you for it would decrease...not by much mind you, but enough that you noticed it. I never knew there was a formula involved though. God that was along time ago...Kunark had been out for a bit, and they had that error with the toolbox recipe where it cost you 9g to make and you could sell it back to vendors for 9p (or something like that). Dont remember it happening in Kunark zones though, just old word zones...but since I was playing an iksar by then I wasnt spending a lot of time in old world cities so I dont know when they changed it...Velious maybe?

The greed formula "theory" is true. It has nothing to do with selling items back for higher than the merchant bought amount. I am not the one that wrote it, but it works like this:

Merchants charge a set price for an item. The more he buys stuff off of players, the less he will pay for buying items and the more he will charge for selling items. The converse is true, where the more people buy stuff off of him, the more he will pay for buying items and the less he will charge for selling items, until it goes back to the base prices. The base prices are caps. You cannot buy lower or sell higher than those prices. In order to get those prices on heavily trafficked merchants, you need a higher charisma.

Otherwise, merchants like Tekrama in the Bazaar would NOT charge you a normal amount at the beginning of a server reset. However, because a TON of people sell junk to him, you have to have a higher Charisma on him after a day or two in order to get the same prices. Thus those people who say that one only needs 120ish Charisma at most are seriously losing out on heavily trafficked merchants like him.

One of the reasons why I stay at 305 Cha unbuffed.

Although it doesn't contain the actual formulae, there is an article on EQTC discussing this phenomenon:

Note that parts of it are out of date; I'll post elsewhere on the corrections.

Thanks for the link. I was reading all the post and remembered reading something about this subject matter before. Once I went to your post with the link it hit me like a ton of bricks, cause thats where I read it before. But I can say this from personal experience not too long ago. I was making banded armor in the qeynos area with my barbarian warrior who had a constant charisma of 88. That never changed. I was running back and forth from north qeynos to qeynos hills buying medium molds and sheet metal. I begain to notice every time I bought the sheet metal it went up in price very slightly. So slight at first that I didnt notice it, but when I did notice it went up every time I clicked on him and bought sheet metal. As far as his other items I didnt pay much attention so can not say. I only payed close attention to the sheet metal.

You can also reset their greed by killing them. I used to do this to the lowby merchant by the bank in Paineel when Paineel used to be farmable.
