  • DB and Netscape

Ok, here's all I can determine:

Problem: DB pages, specifically the pages with the actual recipies on them, will not load properly or hang the browser attempting to load. It will halfway load and freeze, and if you try to manipulate it in any way, it takes forever, as if the system was overloaded trying to display the DB. It will eventually over the course of 5 minutes scroll one line of text. No amount of time (read all night and anohter day while I was at work) made it work. Where the tree would be for in depth item creation info ther instead appear garbled ascii text, the actual text that is supposed to be there, and many small brown squares in lines. So I presume it is not realted to a slowdown of loading. I doubt it is related to any plugins on Netscape, since nothing on my computer has changed since well before the DB went live.

    Points of Interest:
-Problem only started occurring after your latest server crash/transfer. Before that it was a charm to work with.
-Problem occurrs on 3 different computers running 3 different versions of Netscape (7.0, 6.2, and Navigator 4.7).
-Problem does not occur when I use IE on any of the 3 machines. Two use IE 5.5 and one uses IE 5.0 .

I dug over the page source code, and could not discern anything that would make Netscape hang.

That's about all I can spit out atm, so ask any questions yo may have and I'll answer them best I can.

Using Mozilla 1.3 and Netscape 7.1, I haven't been hanging. However, since the last "crash/transfer"/DNS outage, I *have* been having dramatically increased load times on pages with many subcombines, which is probably my setups' version of the same issue. This is especially noticable with anything that requires Celestial Essence, as there are a very large number of possible recipes.

Previously, I would only have a long 'wait' (mostly client side rendering I think, but not sure) when I would click the + to expand and view the long list (ie when I clicked on the "+ Celestial Essence" turning it into "- Celestial Essence" and a list of recipes, there would be a significant temporary-browser-freezing loading/rendering time, and then the list would display).

Now, I get that long temporary-browser-freezing loading/rendering time when loading the page to start with. There is no noticable delay when clicking the + on multi-option recipe now however.

Since I don't need to check the potential recipes for Celestial Essence every time I do a Luclin+ combine, it seemed more logical the old way (only having to deal with the list if you asked for it).

If this was an intentional change, well, that's up to you. If it wasn't, if there's anything I can supply to help, I'd be glad to.

I made a change a bit before the last server move... I will poke around and make sure the current code is up (maybe some old code somehow got moved) but now I know which files to look at. Thanks

ok i pushed some files. Let me know how it goes.

If it continues... can you temporarily turn javascript off... and cut and paste a page with it off to this forum so I can looka t it further.

          ok blank page thing fixed...

can we get back to the netscape problem?

I deleted the blank page posts in this thread just to get it back on topic... NOT because anyone did anything wrong reporting it... I jsut want to keep this thread clean so I can keep up with the netscape issue.

For me the loading is unchanged.

I've done a a 2subcombine recipe so that there are still subcombine trees, but it will fit within the 10k char limit. If you want something bigger, or that I know causes me problems, I can try to post that by some means or another. My normal test is an Underfoot Platemail piece, as the number of subrecipes (and the use of CEs) really gives time to see what's going on.

            Page: http://www.eqtraders.com/items/show_...r=035000000000
            Item: Earthen Temper

            First sample
            Browser: Netscape 7.1

Note: Watching the page load, with Javascript enabled it seems to render the page in chunks with all the "+" subrecipes expanded, then goes back and condenses it down (and returns user control). Without Javascript, it renders in one pass, naturally much faster.

Comparing the NS4.8 source vs the Netscape 7.1 source, they're identical except for whitespace differences (NS4.8 has 2-3 newlines where NS7.1 had 0-1 in a number of places). Thus I haven't posted it (it feels rather redundant), but I can if you want it.

Hopefully this was what you were looking for. I'm personally rather curious to see how this compares to Silound's pages, to see if we're dealing with them differently.

              -----

Unrelated: It would only let me post 9821 characters (by the Javascript length checker), not the advertised 10,000. I don't know where the size difference comes from - the message length in the displayed page is 12854, whereas the character count is 9594 when I count in Textpad (which includes newlines and whitespace). Not a big deal, but figured I should mention it.
