Default Ingredient Info

Just collected some data on gathering.
This isn't scientific or anything, since I didn't collect data on how many nodes I harvested from or how many times I failed while collecting.

Of note, I had a max level of 72 available to me in harvesting skills, and with the reset to 15 skill as my starting level, I managed to get 27/72 Foresting, 28/72 Mining, 23/72 Trapping, and 65/72 Gathering(!!) while harvesting from everything in sight in The Ruins (no, I didn't concentrate on gathering only).

Collected:
Ravished Natural Garden
12 Barley
9 Jumjum
8 Raw Basil
8 Raw Pecan
7 Raw White Tea Leaf
5 Black Coffee Bean
5 Baubleshire Cabbage (note: this is the only thing currently that you can harvest and sell to a vendor, rest of the harvested items have no-value, I'm guessing this is an oversight)
4 Raw Nutmeg

Ravished Natural Herb Garden
8 Juniper
6 Sassafras
5 Milkweed
4 Birchwood
3 Snakeroot
2 Birchroot
2 Silverberry
2 Allspice
2 Twinleaf

Obviously I found more regular gardens than herb gardens.
In the regular garden, Barley is the common, with Jumjum, Basil, Pecan, and White Tea Leaf Uncommon, and the last 3 "rare". 58 successful gathers from regular gardens.
In the herb garden, Juniper seems to be the common, Sassafras, Milkweed, and Birchwood the Uncommon, and the rest rare, though the sample here might be too small to really tell. 31 successful gathers from herb gardens.

Now, if I just could find a reliable place to find "liquid" I'll be all set

That's a rather strange term for a garden like place - I would have expected ravaged instead... (*shrug*) Wonder if this is actually a typo?

There are several variations on "plants" for recipes, sadly.

The "raw average plant" will accept roots, tubers (higher tier, but some folks do it), white tea leaf, (sounds like black tea leaf as well, but again, that's higher level, and a bit of a waste) - it won't accept wood.

It used to be. I haven't gotten that far to check to see what's available after the tradeskill revamp of the last week of Beta. Might need to do tasks to get it to appear.

Or just go hunt things that drop 'liquids' like the slimes in Peat Bog.

I can confirm that baking Salt does not count as a raw inorganic.

Just an FYI, I am currently trying to fashion an item that requires liquid as one of the components and "An accumulation of plasma" is not available in the list as one of my liquids.

Perhaps there is a difference between "an" accumulation of plasma vs accumulation of plasma; or perhaps it is called "accumulated plasma".

I think it's almost fair to assume that anything that "fits" a description can be used as that generic item. For example, malachite is listed as inorganic but also inorganics would be (as mentioned) salt, turquoise and any other "literal" inorganic.. I actually lost a few turquoise making tempers because i figured that if I set the root ingredient once, it would stick.. Wrong! Heh.

FYI I can't select anything other than 'roots' to make Chloro Wash with even though I have some raw average plants (like tubers) in my inventory.

Like whoa. Let's see, what was that chant? Clatu something or another.

The basis for this thread was that some time long ago in the past, monster drops would function as substitute ingredients. While that is true to some extent currently, in the various updates since this thread (Nov 2004!), most of the "generic" usage of components was removed and the monster drops were basically restricted to rare substitutes. They additionally modified (most?) everything to tell you if it operates as a substitute.

Basically, don't expect any substitutions for the basic raws. There may be some left, but for the most part, you'd probably be better off selling that and buy/harvesting more regular raws.

I'll be whipped for necro posting I'm sure ....

but I have found some items labeled with uncommon written on them (normally on pelts and skin I find) that can be used in place of T1 pelts.

Would there be a listing of them? Or is it just not a big deal now.

(*pulls out the whip*) Ah hmm.

With how common and (relatively) easy it is to get the regular components, and how few substitutions drop any more, there doesn't seem to be much need to make a list. And, for the most part, you can sell the substitution item to a merchant and then buy more raws from the broker.

To echo Zendaken, when a few months ago I was looking into using the dropped versions of the ingredients, I found that most of the "uncommon"/dropped variants sold for upwards of a silver (often several silver or into the double digits) while the fuel vendor's versions tend to cost a mere couple copper. With some of the non-vendor sold items, like pelts, the dropped versions still tended to sell for more (to NPC vendors) than it cost to buy the harvested version (from the broker).
