I was reading this article and it's follow-up posts:
psychochild (DOT, sorry I haven't posted much yet) org/?p=810 One main question the OP has is, as far as I can make out in my fuzzy-shouldn't-be-up-this-early-state, 'Let's get some games with player set achievements' instead of game set achievements. And I can't help thinking that my two current house projects in EQ2 is exactly that. SOE hasn't listed a 'create a uniquely decorated house' achievement. I don't get a happy ding sound when it's done and the final product won't make me more efficient in killing things by granting me an epictastic kill-all weapon. It WILL however make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside and though I'll feel extra gratified if someone else pops in for a look and agrees with me, it's not required for MY achievement. But since these nice gentlemen seem to be having so much fun with their very serious discussion I didn't want to post there and ruin it for them. So I hope ya'll will forgive me for smirking here. /Sigh I should have come back to EQ2 sooner. |

Perhaps achievements are their "shineys" ... the things they want to collect.
They don't feel they're getting enough, so they want more? *shrugs unknowingly* I thoroughly enjoy decorating, too. When I finally get something I've imagined to appear in my in-game house, and wrangle it into that "just right" effect, I feel like I've accomplished something. ![]() Like you, I enjoy it if someone else comes by and agrees -- but I'm going to feel pleased for some time, even if nobody stops by! ... at least until the next project, anyhow!

Um, achievements mean exactly as much if you want them to mean. You want to dedicated yourself to getting every achievement out there, go ahead. You want to ignore them completely, go ahead. You want to invent your own goals and try to achieve them, go ahead...
But codify player -made achievements into the game? Er... they'd be so many where would you stop? And how is the game mechanics supposed ot track them? Especially something like "having a well-decorated home" or some such that is completely subjective? Er... can't see how this would work on an official basis. But who said it has to be official? Just recently I made a little goal for myself to get a piece of every kind of NOTD candy. I did and bragged about it to me guild. Didn't get any official recognition for it, but I enjoyed it. So hey, if you want to set some goal for yourself and work towards it, go for it! I just can't see though how it would be workable to do such things officially... except for maybe some things that could somehow be measured objectively (fall 100 yards without dying maybe? Win a duel unarmed and only using autoattack? Heck sure some can be dreamt up... but have to draw the line somewhere lol...) Edit: OK after reading that thing, well I guess I wasn't responding to that correctly lol (I respond to message posts, not outside articles). How to create your own sense of adventure? Er... use your imagine and roleplay I guess. Explore the content as much as you want. Game mechanics can only do so much. I understand his point I suppose... but the problem is, what does he propose to do about it? He doesn't seem to have much of an answer...
