The comprehensive complete tradeskill guide 3.0 is great and very useful, however, with regards to Pottery, I was just curious about the route after 199.

Is there a benefit or advantage to following the trivial list in the 3.0 guide and make the steins and bands, or would it be just as good or better to go straight to unfired idol (amber)?

    Any thoughts or comments welcome.

    Its cheaper.

Pottery from 200+ is basically throw plat at it til you hit 300. There is no way really to get around that.

The steins and the bands are cheaper, per combine, than the idols.

That said, your character's ability to gather one component over another can change the list.

I play a wood elf druid. So I worship Tunare. Getting imbued emeralds was much easier for me than trying to track down someone to imbue the other gems for me.

The bazaar can also be your friend in that you may find some components cheaper than what it would cost to buy a gem to make a combine. Also, there is really no sell back price in pottery, so its almost complete losses on combines.

      Are they though?
If you look at what is required to make each item:

unfired opal encrusted stein (opal). roughly costs 19p per combine. triv 222
unfired white ceramic band (opal, peridot). roughly costs 30p per combine. triv 231
unfired red ceramic band (fire opal, peridot). roughly costs 65p per combine. triv 242

unfired idol (amber, emerald). roughly costs 16p per combine. triv 248

In brackets I included the gems required per combine, hence how I calculated how much each item roughly costs to attempt. It seems the unfired idols are a much better and more economic path after 199. Have I missed something here?

For the idols. You need an emerald AND another gem. Also, you need a chanter to make you a bunch of vials of mana AND enchant your clay.

Remember though, the guide is just that, a guide. You can choose to go whatever path you want.

Also, while there isn't much resale on the finished product, keep in mind that some of them might tribute for a reasonable price. I got all of my alts a pretty decent tribute stock from all of the star ruby steins I made on my way to 300.

            steins vs idols

The main cost of idols is the distilled mana. Even if you have a chanter, the distilled mana costs ~210p to make. The steins cost ~20p and are sometimes sellable in bazaar.

Here is the unfired idol that will take you up to 255:
              http://www.eqtraders.com/items/show_...r=080090900000

According to my calculations, and unless eqtraders is wrong, these unfired idols using a star rose quartz should cost roughly 14-15 plat per combine. They use vial of clear mana (emerald), not distilled mana (sapphire x2).

I'm planning to do these from 199-255, instead of making steins and/or bands which cost more. I have my own cleric and chanter capable of doing the imbue/enchanting.

              Am I missing something??

Did you miss something? Not really, except they are talking about the diety idols (335 trivial) to skill up to 300 you are talking about one part of the skill up path.

The idol you mention is fine to 255.
