  • Raising JC Skill (My notes)

Hello everyone, new member here although I have been reading for some time. I wanted to say thank you so much for these wonderful boards and the great information that you all contribute. I thought I would give a little back, so here is my 2cp worth on raising my skill.

I recently made an Enchanter and have leveled him to 44. When I dinged 39 I started working on my JC Skill. Thanks to all of the info on these boards I am now at a skill of 202. I did not move from the two jewlers in PoK and all of the following items are purchased from them. Here is how my progression went over the last 2 days. Bear in mind I did use a Geerlock the entire time!

0 - 21: Went to my Guild Master and used my Points.

    22 Silver + Hematite
    23 - 24 Silver + Cat's Eye Agate
    25 - 26 Silver + Bloodstone
    27 - 28 Silver + Onyx
    29 - 30 Silver + Jasper
    31 - 32 Silver + Carnelian
    33 - 34 Silver + Star Rose Quartz
    35 - 40 Silver + Jade
    41 - 42 Silver + Pearl
    43 - 44 Silver + Topaz

    75 - 76 Electrum + Lapis Lazuli
    77 - 79 Electrum + Turquoise
    80 - 82 Electrum + Hematite
    83 - 84 Electrum + Cat's Eye Agate
    85 - 87 Electrum + Bloodstone
    88 - 90 Electrum + Onyx
    91 - 92 Electrum + Jasper
    93 - 95 Electrum + Carnelian
    96 - 98 Electrum + Star Rose Quartz
    99 - 106 Electrum + Jade
    107 - 108 Electrum + Pearl
    109 - 111 Electrum + Topaz
    112 - 114 Electrum + Peridot
    115 - 116 Electrum + Emerald
    117 - 119 Electrum + Opal
    120 - 146 Gold + Malachite
    147 - 148 Gold + Lapis Lazuli
    149 - 151 Gold + Turquoise
    152 - 154 Gold + Hematite
    155 - 156 Gold + Cat's Eye Agate
    157 - 159 Gold + Bloodstone
    160 - 162 Gold + Onyx
    163 - 164 Gold + Jasper
    165 - 167 Gold + Carnelian
    168 - 170 Gold + Star Rose Quartz
    171 - 178 Gold + Jade
    179 - 183 Gold + Topaz
    184 - 186 Gold + Peridot
    187 - 188 Gold + Emerald
    189 - 191 Gold + Opal
    192 - 196 Gold + Fire Opal

    * From 0 to 196 took me 4 hours and 4500pp. I was level 39 with 196 INT. I did not enchant my bars!*

    197 - 199 Gold + Star Ruby
    200 - 202 Gold + Fire Emerald

    * From 197 to 202 took me approximately 1 hour and cost about 3500pp. I was level 44 with 223 INT. I enchanted about half of the bars from my combines!

Ok, I did some experimenting with enchanting the silver, electrum, and gold. My results showed that taking the time to enchant silver produced almost no monetary gain when selling back to vendor. (IE a couple of cp). Results were similar for Electrum with only about a couple of Silver gained.

Now as far gold goes, it is beneficial to enchant the gold to sell back to vendors. Enchanting GOLD + Star Ruby and Gold + Fire Emerald netted me an additional 9pp. SO if you have the time and patienece, I do recommend you enchant from gold on up. I am not patient and therefore when I ran out of mana I just combined normal bars.

As for my plan to get to 250....

I am going to level up to 46, so that I can get KEI and max my INT. I will then spend a lot of time and enchant a lot of Platinum Bars! This will be my progression from 203 - 250:

    203 - 218 Platinum + Malachite
    219 - 220 Platinum + Lapis Lazuli
    221 - 223 Platinum + Turquoise
    224 - 226 Platinum + Hematite
    227 - 228 Platinum + Cat's Eye Agate
    229 - 231 Platinum + Bloodstone
    232 - 234 Platinum + Onyx
    235 - 236 Platinum + Jasper
    237 - 239 Platinum + Carnelian
    240 - 242 Platinum + Star Rose Quartz
    243 - 244 Platinum + Amber
    244 - 250 Platinum + Jade

*Yes I skipped a couple of Gold combines and went straight to platinum! Here is why! With a geerlock my effective skill at 202 is 212. The cost of the last two gems for the gold combines are about 40pp more then the first two platinum combines. Would it equal out with faiulres and such? No idea, but this way seems more logical to me!!!

Thank you all for your time and great info!!

    Update on my progress!

Hey everyone, I dinged 46 and have been steadily climbing in my JC Skill. I will now share my notes from 202 to 244. The following was done with an INT of 245 and a Geerlock was equiped. One thing i'd like to mention is that I kept Boon of Garou on myself the entire time. This brought my DEX up to about 218. It is my opinion that the higher DEX helps on your success ratio for creating the new item. This does not effect skill ups, but will effect the money you spend! I have no hard proof of this, but it is my experience that the DEX is helping!

    203 - 218 Platinum + Malachite

It took me a total of 499 Combines to get through this part. Each stack of Platinum was costing me 2099pp. Now I know that seems like a lot, but here is the good news. I actually made 144pp at the end of this section.

    219 - 220 Platinum + Lapis Lazuli

It took me 46 Combines to finish this part! Still have lost 0 money.

    221 - 223 Platinum + Turquoise

28 Combines to do this part. Lost approximately 50pp

    224 - 226 Platinum + Hematite

63 Combines. Total Loss was again about 50pp

    227 - 228 Platinum + Cat's Eye Agate

103 Combines. No appreciable loss was sustained this time!

    229 - 231 Platinum + Bloodstone

17 Combines. Did not fail any of these and made 85pp.

    232 - 234 Platinum + Onyx

    43 Combines. Lost about 100pp

    235 - 236 Platinum + Jasper

48 Combines. Sold a few of these to PC's while making them so I actually made about 450pp here. But if ya take away the ones I sold to PC's, then I broke even.

    237 - 239 Platinum + Carnelian

    70 Combines. Broke Even

    240 - 242 Platinum + Star Rose Quartz

46 Combines. No Loss in pp

    243 - 244 Platinum + Amber

17 Combines. No Failures, made about 85pp

Ok so I started at 202 with 10kpp. I ended at 244 with 10300pp! Yea I made a profit!!! Hope this info helps someone!!

I am a first time JC'er and I used your guide to start me off. I was absolutely thrilled and impressed by the ladder of progress you have here. I went from 0-191 in 2 hours and 2500pp. I will attempt to go to 200 tonight but I love your guide and will use it in my notes at home for future characters and give it to fellow players on my server, thanks.

Had a Wisdom of 300 and no Geerlok. Started with 5k and ended up with 2500.

On the platinum combines, that you made 300 pp with. Did you enchant the bars first?

Congrats on 244 and the trophy.

In the first post you say 'it took me 4 hours and 4500 pp'. Is that total pp or loss? I know most of my beginning jewlery sold back pretty much at cost if I suceeded so that seems high if its loss.

Thank you for the kind words, and I am very glad that the guide has helped you. These boards have helped me so much, and it is my pleasure to return the favor!

Yes all profits are with enchanted bars! The finished product will sell back for less if it is not enchanted!

Sorry for the late reply, been busy in real life! That was total loss. Please remember that i did not enchant any of those bars during that skill range. Also know that my INT was a bit low at that time.

Enchanting the bars would have been way to time consuming for my taste, and it was well worth the extra the PP!

I just want to add that I had no Geerlok, Int was way below my Wisdom, had no KEI just raw Wisdom, and did not enchant the bars. My Cha is like 268 now because of my other 2 trophies so I only lost 2500 pp on the 0-191 run. I then lost another 2k going from 191-196 with no Geerlok again and non-enchanted bars. Really for the effort that you have to put out, which is minimal at most because of this guide, and the limited running around, I don't mind losing 5k or so to get 200 skill in any tradeskill especially JC. Whatever the disputes are I think is miniscule compared to the ability gained here for 5k or so. I had been so afraid of the JC tarde because of horror stories of cost. I think back now to how many Enchanters were trying to dupe me out of a Jewlers life cause they wanted the profits all to themselves HEHE

I hate to mention this, since I sell them, but....

Gold Nihilite earrings trivial at 202. Turning in the Raw Pale Nihilite to the quest NPC will get you two Pale Nihilites to work with, so it'll be much cheaper than using fire emeralds or star rubies even at Bazaar prices. If you enchant the bars, you'll be surprised at how good the resulting earrings are or how much they sell for in The Bazaar. You'd likely finish the trip from 192 to 202 with enough cash to pay for your entire JC journey from 1 to 250.

update on profit portion of this thread

You can no longer make a profit from doing tradeskills and selling back to a vendor.

eg: Plat Malachite Ring cost 105 PP to make and vendor gives you 100 PP. So that is a loss of 5 PP per combine, and 105 PP per fail.

When my ranger did fletching to 250 way back when you could make a good profit making the high end bows if a tinker made the cams. That was nerfed also.

Apparently it was nerfed, unnerfed, then renerfed quietly quite recently. I skilled up with my chanter before the first nerf, then skilled up my druid for the prayer shawl during the unnerfed stage. Don't know when the renerf happened... maybe during that August patch?

LDoN jewellery sells back to the vendor at a pittance. Geode jewellery, for example, sells to vendor about a tenth of the price of the metal bar, regardless of whether it was enchanted.
