  • My shawl experience

Total cost of obtaining shawl: Around 30-35k
Total time spent: 13 days of around 4-8 hours per day, starting with 0 to all tradeskills. Using guides on this website to raise skills. Easily done.

Only time I ever failed on any combine was with sixth shawl. Failed twice with 160 + geerlock in tailoring. I'd imagine this is where most of the frustration comes. I recommend just collecting enough parts for 3 attempts and getting 160 skill.. which is easy enough. Don't bother trying to get it any higher.

Crawl is overkill with two groups I'd imagine. I did mine with one group of well equipped mostly 65's. Can speed up the crawl with a fd person too, as long as he knows where all the triggers are he can agro and run general from trigger to trigger, cuts time in half.

Thought I'd post this to inspire those who might be turned off by the quests introduction on eqtraders. It discouraged me from starting for over 4 months. Now that I've actually done it I can say it's really not nearly as bad as it's made out to be. If you've been putting it off because yout hought it was too much of a pita... do it!

I worked on the shawl quest on and off for about 6 months before completing it. I took my time and never let it frustrate me. In the end it didnt seem that bad, maybe as difficult as the Rogue, Ranger(Offhand) or Shaman epic. As you approach the higher levels, I am sure this is even easier. I had a lot of help from my partner (62 shaman) doing this, so it made collecting the difficult drops easy.

But in a nutshell .. yes I agree with you .. this quest is no longer as tough or difficult as it once was. Tradeskill skillups have been jacked up, level caps raised .. heck as you said 1 group of 65s did the escort.

Eep! With encouragement like that, who NEEDS discouragement - being so casually told that one can bang this out for a mere 30-35k sure as heck isn't going to inspire the average person who doesn't have that kind of plat to burn.

I've also gotta kind of wonder how it ended up costing you SO much - you have to have done something terribly wrong, or the bazaar prices for raw materials must be wacked on your server.

Here's the semi-cheapo route to take - will mention when I farmed.

Baking - cheap - maybe 200 plat max to get to 191 (which you don't have to do)
Brewing - fairly cheap as well - fetid eccense gets you to 120ish for next to nothing, skull ale is pretty reasonable even if you drop 50p for the skull in the bazaar, assume you aren't a forager, no more than 200-250 to skill up.
Fletching - been a while since I've skilled this, but it's pretty reasonable - if you sell back your combines then I beleive you aren't talking more than 1k to get into the 160s where you need to be - this is probobly overshooting too.
JC - Just did this without chanting and can tell you that even with a horrific string of failed combines and bad skill sets, I still got to 181 on just 1500 plat.
Pottery - not as easy as it used to be, but still reasonable until you hit 144 - then it's farm skins or make casserole dishes (anoying). Still though, unless you're paying more than 2-3plat per zombie skin in the bazaar, you should be able to max this skill out for no more than 500p max (and if you want to chance the combine, you can be lazy and stop at 144).
Smithing - OK, this one is raw, I can see someone spending 5-10k trying to get this to 188, then again, I can also see someone who's willing to do the farming get to 188 for next to nothing, so it's more about time to plat.
Tailoring - erf, ok, another raw one. About 1k to skill to 70ish, another 1k if you buy your pelts to trivial quivers. Crystal silks are EASY to get in Velks and CC so I say there's no excuse to pay for them. If you've gotta bazaar the Wu's raw materials, you're definately hosed for another 3-5k depending on server and if you brew your own kiolas, if you can put in the time and farm them though, it should be almost free - maybe 200-300 plat at most due to failures.

So realistically speaking, unless you're farming the bazaar instead of hunting your own raw materials, you'll be able to get where you need to be in all of the tradeskills for about 18k MAX and more like 5-8k if you're willing to put in some effort farming. This is of course assuming that you've got a zero skill in all your tradeskills.

The next issue of cost is the components themselves.

1st 4 toes - 25p each to buy, an hour or so to farm

2nd 10 heads - 20p each to buy, 1-3 hours to farm depending on luck and competition

3rd Nearly everything is no drop anyway - the one or two droppable parts can be gotten for 10plat at most (well, there's always someone willing to charge 1k per meat, but paying that for ulthork meat is YOUR choice)

4th Can farm and make for free in about 30 mins in CC or for about 150p buying in bazaar.

5th All no-drop stuff - unless you are paying for looting rights, 100% free

6th beard and manes go for 25 each in bazaar or free in 30 mins of farming - rest is no drop so paying for loot rights is all that will increase costs

7th Big expense is if you buy the shell and the blood - 300-500 for the shell and 2-5k for the blood. The tusk and hide go for about 50p each at most if you can even find them for sale. Can be 100% free if you farm yourself though.

8th the gems have to be farmed, so paying to loot is the only danger there, the velium and the fur can either be farmed or bought. I'm going to farm my own velium in CC - buying the tempers is going to be expensive enough as it is (get a GM brewer buddy to make for you - way cheaper). No way in hell am I paying 1k each for the hound furs - can't afford it - gonna have to self farm those suckers. Haven't finished this one yet, so can't fully comment on cost.

But as you can see, the cost to do all 8 shawls isn't quite as bad as 30-35k - maybe half that at most if you don't like farming and only a fraction of that if you can't afford to not farm.

        well..

Upon closer reflection it was probably more like 25k. Pretty much everything that was droppable, I bought. Time to me is a lot more important than plat and one can derive zero enjoyment from killing nonsense in order to obtain tradeskill components. I wanted to spend less than two weeks on the whole project. The furs alone were probably around 8k. Not very practical to try and camp them as there are lots that do it for cash, even more doing it for shawl and If i remember correctly they have cov faction stuff as ph's for them. I also wasted cash on crap like cod oils and wyvern hides because I had planned to take tailoring to 180-190. Thankfully, that wasn't necessary and I could probably sell it all and recoup some of the cost.

In any case, 25k for such a nice item, an item that sells for 200-300k on FV isn't bad (no i'm not on FV, just thought it interesting).

          time = money = time

Unless you got pp getting droped into your lap somehow then spending pp getting the components means the ammount of time you spent getting the pp = the ammount of time spent collecting the components you bought.

I decided that most things that where dropable would take me less time to farm than to farm cash in order to buy.

And that's exactly what I did, I didn't buy any of the components from anyone, farmed it all myself (Except for the components needed to remake the darn leggings after failing the combine /grumble). Took about 3 hours in CC mass murdering orcs (I happily discovered I can clean the entire well out before they start repoping) and about 6 or so hours total in WW chasing velium hounds down. The only item I didn't farm was the blood, which a friend of mine gave me, much to my sheer overwhelming joy.

One bitter, obnoxious quest, but one hell of a nice shoulder peice.

NP - one needs to point that out first - if you don't identify your target audience then many will take it the wrong way - although whether you said 25k or 35k, it's still intimidating to John Q Eqplayer.

Can start commenting on smithing now - got to 151 this evening on about 1250 plat.

Did a smattering of cheap stuff and condensed shadow up to 71, then the chains for PotC to 111 (got a pet 34 chanter - took about 4 stacks of silver to do those 40 points), ornate gold till 135 (at about 21 plat per combine, it was still cheaper then plate) and then gorgets to 151.

Most of my padding was self aquired or cost less than 10p each farming in bazaar, so I got off relatively cheap in that vein.

Not looking forward to what the last 37 points will do to my wallet, but if I can sell a few things tonight, maybe moot - fingers crossed.

                Here is my shawl experience:

I started back in November. I had done some baking and tailoring, both about 135 or so, when I decided to start the shawl. I was in GD and EW a lot at that time as I had lower level friends in the area that I was helping out. I did shawl 1 2 and 3 pretty quickly. Shawl 4, ut oh, pottery. Run to POK, a few hours later pottery at 140ish. What the hey, fletching too, a few hours in POK 150. Managed to make the Velium Vapors and serendipitiously saw a booboo spell for sale in bazaar for 2K plat. With Booboo, I found the deathsquad 5 times in a row and finally the dwarf and shawl 4 was mine. It sat in the bank for close to 6 months. Then I started tradeskilling heavily. Lots of time in EK farming silk and Jaggedpine getting hides from poachers. Went the Wus route and got tailoring to 158. Worked on jewelcraft, brewing and smiting around then too. Got all of them to the 160 to 188 range. After Wus I found out about LOY ribbons. Yes, this is expensive, but I found I could forage in JP while quadding gnoll warriors. Went up 3 levels, made 12K plat on the poachers and got enough plant shoots to get tailoring to 183.

I had spent some time in GD doing wurms for biles. I had 3 so far after about 15 hours there. I managed to get my last 2 and went off to velks for the threads. While I was quadding in JP, when I got board I would go look for drops for shawl 6 7 and 8. I got most of that stuff at this time, but a lot of it I just bought in the bazaar whenever it was cheap enough. I was very lucky in velks, I would log on each morning 1 hour before work and had the zone to myself. This Friday and Saturday I spent a good part of the day there and got my last threads. I had already finished the spool of sacred thread for 6 and had the pattern on me and was combining threads as I went. As I sat medding in velks I combined shawl 5 and 6 back to back with a skill of 183 plus geerlock. With all the velium I got there, I thought I could probably start on some armor. I had about 3/4 of the velium needed and I had made a large supply of coldain temper previously. I bought the few pieces of velium I still needed and the furs (ouch). I managed to make all the armor first try with 188 and geerlok (yah!). I had 3 unrefined gems and attempted them, 1 sucess 2 failures with 179 jewelcraft with geerlok. Two hours yesterday in WL and I got all 7 gems I needed and suceeded on them : )

The bad news, I have most of the stuff for shawl 7, but I failed on the unfired rune. I have everything at this point except for another runed sea shell and the swordfish tooth. Once I can get a mini SG raid together and get those items I should be able to finish this : ) It's been a fun time, but a long road to get here. This last 4 days has been amazing to see all I have been working on for all these months finally come together so well.

I have to attribute all my sucess to EQTraders and all the folks with advice and guides for the various steps. thanks everyone : )

Effectively finished that smithing today - through a combo of farmed and vendor mined padding, I was able to get from 151 to 184 on 5k, although I had some horrific luck in catching 184 as a hell level.

So figure on spending 6-7k on getting smithing up to snuff if you're very cheap in the bazaar and farm out about 140 of your paddings personally.

So, excluding opportunity cost from the equation, getting all skills up to snuff as well as buying only the merchant part of the shawl (plus the seashell) my total cost was under 10k thus far - need to figure out the costs for the final combines of #8 now that I've got the skill - since I'll be farming everything personally, tempers will be the only real issue part.
