With the evolution of Everquest we have seen various tradeskill items come in with a roar then die and pass to the great beyond. It is a sad thing to be sure and I was thinking what could be done to make smithing (I am a smith so I think about this in terms of smithing) a more robust tradeskill, that didnt obsolete old recipes when new ones came out.
Why, it seems like only yesterday I was making my old cultural armor then PoP armor and getting such a kick out of skilling up and actually being able to sell what I made to players. It is a shame that most smiths today will never touch those armor recipes again.
But What If....?
What if there was an NPC that was collecting that armor (The Treasure Hunter), and in exchange for you bringing him a bundle of various armors he would return to you the best tradeskill armor in the game?
Now the NPC is needed because he would issue a crate that would have to be filled and combined into a bundle of armor. The Armor he returns to you would be no drop and better than anything having to do with smithing to date. To give you an idea what I am talking about, A Bundle of Chest Plate Armor may call for:
An Acrylia Breastplate
Two Different Breastplates of Planes Armor
Two Different Breastplates of old Cultural Armor
A Breastplate from each of the four tiers of new Cultural Armor (Unauged No Drop armor can be used) This is a value and incentive for those that lvl up wearing DoN Cultural armor.
The quest reward would need to be worth it, I am not even going to try and guess at what that may be. I just know that some complain that the equipment gap has grown to wide. Use this type quest to help reduce it without being game breaking. I am sure it would need to be someplace beneath TBS purchasable armor.
I believe the positive results of this quest would change the game in a good way, in that it would place demand on unused resources. It would allow smiths, even low lvls to skill up and still have demand for their smithed goods.
Then again, maybe it is to little to late.
Next on "Whats on Troy's mind"..... Yttrium Armor for the win!
