Some of us here have already experienced our server mergers, but many more are scheduled for the remainder of April and into May, and I wanted to note a couple of items here for those still waiting.
First, it's not as scary as you'll think. Very few of the people I've played with for years experienced having an "x" added to any character names, which was a possibility most of us were stressing over. For the most part things go smoothly, and there are a lot more MGB's going off and groups are easier to find than they've been for those of us who were on Lanys for a long time now. If you do have an "x" appended and wish to change the name, use /changename <new name here> when logged on the character in question, and if it passes the name filter you'll be sent to a CSR for approval so it doesn't cost you anything, and voila! you're all set.
OF NOTE: If your server name is changing, YOU MUST MANUALLY EDIT YOUR EQ FILES to reflect the new name in order to access hotkeys, UI's, friends lists, and for those of us here, those all important TRADESKILL FAVORITES. It's not as hard as it sounds - you can look through the various folders and just change server name during the downtime so you'll be ready, or you can search for all files ending in your current server name, and change them there. For example, my previous extender was _lanys, now it is _seventh. To find out what it will be on your new server, you can go create a new character there in advance and see how it's listed (even if you delete the character, the files will still retain the entry, so you should be able to see it).
