  • A work rant of a different color.

    This isn't normal.

I'm not complaining about the customers. At least, not in the traditional sense of the word.

I got a call tonight. From a customer who mentioned at one point, that she works for My bank. From the first second of the call, and all throughout, she had been using vulgarity and various 4 letter words, in a loud tone, with a friend of hers, which always sets the tone of a call.

There was a problem running her card somewhere, and she was upset. Totally understandable. I checked every system we have, and NOTHING was wrong. Card wasn't closed, her account had plenty of money, and nobody placed a hold or freeze on the card. She mentioned that she had tried it at more then one place, and it didn't work anywhere.

I explained to her that it was entirely possible that there was a physical defect with the card (A demagnetized strip, or a broken card..), I offered to send out a new card immediatly , and she got belligerent, started yelling at me, and was entirely too demeaning. WAY beyond understandable upset-levels. While shouting, she demanded that I repeat what I had said, and then hung up in the middle of the call.

I launched immediatly into the next call, slightly stunned. After calming myself for a few calls, I thought rationally.

I looked over at another screen. Her information was still in front of me. Ran her last name in our company address book. Found the branch she works at, and noted it. Didn't do anything about it for the next hour and ah half. Got off work, and stuck around. Composed a thoughtful, hopefully well phrased email to MY bosses, explaining her lack of professionalism, and my uncomfortability with her behavior.

The point of this rant is... When you call into your place of employment, and ask someone to examine your information, perhaps being a total, unbearable, offensive jerk to them may not be the best course of action. They know the same people you do, and they have the all the right channels to complain to if you are rude or stupid.

Perhaps it would be a nice change to see something different then "why I hate the world" and "why everyone else is more stupid then me" posts in this EQ Tradeskill forum.

      Hmm. *looks up*

"Primal screams and random chatter, Primal scream room ...."

      "A work rant..."

      "Lilosh"

      ....

I didn't read the thread expecting anything about tradeskills...

      *shrug*

      Lilosh-

      two things...

People are always less courteous when not "face to face" than when in person.

"An armed society is a polite society." (Watched a bit on the History channel the other day about "Old West" gunfights. Two upshots. One, people were generally not stupid enough to walk toward each other in the main street at high noon with everyone watching. Usually the loser was shot in the head from behind. Two, most people were quite polite up thru the mid 1930's due to people carrying concealed weapons. "It behooved you to be polite, because you never knew when the other guy might reach into his pocket, pull out a pocket gun and put a bullet in you.")

Wonder if people on PVP servers are more polite than on blue servers?

But since I would never try PVP since I consider it a waste of time.... I'll never know.

(My apologies to those that love PVP. I personally hate it and refuse to play any game with open PK. I realize a lot of people love it. Some people refuse to eat meat. Takes all kinds.)
In My (Not Always) Humble Opinion, except where I quote someone. If I don't know I say so.
I suck at this game, your mileage WILL vary. My path is probably NON-optimal.

Not to derail the subject of the thread, but I'd really LOVE to see folks stop flaming or bashing those who choose to use a rant forum for RANTING about something...isn't this what it's here for? If you don't want to read people's rants, DON'T READ THEM!!! Personally, I think it's cool that this forum is here for people to complain about whatever they want, but there is a difference between someone ranting about something and someone flaming someone else for using this forum as it was intended. I'll say this again for those who missed it the first time. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ PEOPLE'S RANTS, DON'T! But don't fault them for exercising their right to express them in a forum created specifically for that purpose.

          Quite!

Mind you, I'm not saying that all is sweetness and light on Vallon. I've traded a few friendly insults with shorties of all flavors, attempted a few wood-elf butt-kickings, and considered it all fun and games.

It was only AFTER I moved from Vallon that I ever had someone in a group with me call me rude names-- or someone in my own GUILD.

*koff* the guild matter got straightened up, even while I sat on my hands to avoid answering the barked request "How do I leave this stupid guild?" with a set of instructions involving scissors and their power cord...

Bleh. People, if a certain person bothers you, it's very simple not to read their posts.

If you read it and get irritated, then you have no right to jump at them.

There's nothing wrong with what was written here. As others have mentioned, it's a place for letting off steam- be it RL or game.

Personally, Lilosh cracks me up. Let's cut him a break, mm?

Same kinda thing, only from the opposite end. I called in to my husband's job for a friend. She'd had a bad check collected on electronically (my husband's company deals with all things to do with electronic funds transfer) and could not find ANY bad checks written in her records. So she talked to me and I said I'd call in and find out what check it was, WHEN, etc (I know this is something they can do as I myself have done it before). When I called on the line that was SUPPOSED to go to my husband's desk...someone else answered. Well I know all the people he works with from company picnics, softball teams, etc and figured they could help me just as easily as my husband could. BOY was I wrong. I got the snottiest person up there on the phone and he proceeded to chew me a new one for thinking the company could EVER make a mistake. *I* wasn't saying they'd made a mistake...*I* was trying to pinpoint the DATE or at least the check number so my friend could find out what OTHER checks might bounce because of it. He cursed me up one side and down the other for daring to call in on HIS support line with such a dumb request /boggle.

Anyway, I didn't tell him who I was until the very end..because who *I* am shouldn't have made a difference as to how he treated a customer on the phone. At the end tho, I let him know that my husband was his boss and I would make sure he knew how calls were being handled. I thought that would shut him up, but oh no...he called me some rather nasty terms and hung up. I called right back at the same number...and wonder of wonders got my husband that time LOL. Needless to say the guy got chewed out and ended up quitting the next day due to the "punishment" he received (never did find out what that was, but it was enough to make him quit LOL).

People REALLY should stop and think...you never know who that person might be on the other end of the line. And if you answer your boss's phone...you better make ****ed sure you mind your P's and Q's.

This message brought to you by someone EXTREMELY happy to not work in customer service anymore LOL

Having a rough tradeskill day or finally managed that elusive final combine? RNG with you or against you? Come on in and tell us. Remember to keep it clean and stay away from personal attacks.
Where in that does it say this forum welcomes non-tradeskill rants? Perhaps OOC would be more appropriate.

I'm sorry if you are offended that I posted that I didn't think was an appropriate place for non-EQ rants. The negativity in this folder is amazing and the only thing these non-EQ posts have generated lately is flaming. Sorry if I did not see the need for another hate post.

First. I think the original post fits better here than in the /ooc folder. The tone of the post fits better here, but that is an opinion, and folks are free to disagree.

Second. Tradeskill and eq related threads get heated and locked as fast as any others. Ijust looked at the first several pages here to check, and most locked threads are eq related.

Third. Absolultely, be polite to people when you can because you never know when a rough word can come back to bite you.

Fourth. Sometimes you have to let someone else have the last word. I felt I had to post, but that doesn't mean I will reply if someone posts after me on this one.
                  Have fun. See you later.

I read Lilosh's posts, and I think to myself, 'I am so glad I am doing what I do now.'

Casino Security is Public Relations, Emergency Response, and Handling Complaints, among other things. Mostly handling complaints.

When somebody gets rude to the point of harassment to me or somebody else, they are almost always doing it face to face. And, in my job, I CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

I warn them once, and only once.

If they do it again, they get asked nicely to leave.

If they don't, they get evicted.

If they come back, they get arrested and charged with Defiant Trespass. Yes, casinos are private property.

My supervisors will back me. They know that to allow anybody to continue harassing any other patron or employee is to risk a hostile work environment lawsuit, and will them cost other customers.

                    I like my job...

You know, I strongly considered this statement.

In the end, my respose is:

Then don't read it. I'm not trying to be rude or sarcastic here. You can see the name of the poster and the title of the post without opening it. If you think to yourself that you probably are not going to like what you read there and then open the thread and find you were right, you only have yourself to blame. It's the same thing as not asking a question when you don't think you'll like the answer.

The reason I'm responding here is that this touches on my fastest growing pet-peeve. A while back I did this long post on people who misunderstand what someone says and blaming the speaker for not being more careful with his/her words. This is similar. I know I'm going to sound like an old codger but I'm tired of people "these days" not looking beyond their own noses. I'm tired of seeing people pointing the finger and acting like two young kinds in the backseat of the car arguing over who "started it". The vast majority of the people who post here are adults and the ones who aren't act adult enough that I can't tell who they are. However, this type of behavior is not adult-like, we should know better.

Tinile, you hinted that you'd like to see more positive posts; I can agree with that. Times are tough for a lot of people and even those with solid jobs are feeling it with companies down-sizing or changing benefits and friends/family losing jobs around them. Some people respond to that by getting upset or stressed and others try to turn to things that make them "feel good". I'm the kind of person who'd rather laugh than stress and take an active hand in making it happen. At the moment though, I'd like to see more people (and I'm not pointing the finger at anyone specifically here, this is general) taking a moment to honestly think about their own involvement in a problem before complaining/pointing the finger. I can honestly think of very few things in my life that have bothered me that I didn't "assist" in some way. When it comes down to it, our focus on individual rights has had a side effect of make for a very selfish society. Thinking back on the past few weeks, I can find things that I've done where I've not taken the time to think beyond myself and it makes me feel rather ashamed of myself...

Hehe, unless you're in an online casino it's hard to have non-face-to-face contact.

People who argue with Security Guards (especially in casinos) are not paying enough attention. (Can you say "gaming control board officers" ... I knew you could. And in "indian" casinos, it's private property. It's on the reservation. It's FEDERALLY protected. The security guards are, in fact, POLICE OFFICERS. They can -arrest- you on -federal- charges.)

One time I went in to a casino. I was wearing a industrial band T-shirt. I sat and played blackjack for several hours. Then I got up and played a little craps because one of the blackjack players said he'd show me how to play.

Little time passes. (Like 5 or 10 minutes)

Casino security guy: "Excuse me, sir, but we have to ask you to remove your shirt."

Itek: *turns around* ... *sees TWO security guys, young, heavy set, hands convieniently near weapons* (yes, virginia, indian casino cops = real cops = real guns)

Cop: "You have profianity on your shirt and that's not allowed. We have to ask you to change your shirt."

Itek: "Hmm... I'm not staying in the hotel and don't have a change of shirt. May I go in the restroom and turn it inside out?"

Please leave issues of where a post belongs to the moderators. That's why we're here. There are 7620 registered users of these boards, and 7620 different opinions on how things should be done. So Niami has us here to make those decisions, based on her instructions and guidelines. That way we stay as close as we can to one opinion: Niami's.

Conversations unrelated to tradeskills go in OOC. Rants go in Primal Scream. We tend to put rants unrelated to tradeskills in Primal Scream along with the tradeskills rants, simply because they're all rants. Of all the forums, Primal Scream is the one folks are least likely to want to search for a useful piece of information, so it is the best place to allow a little messiness. Keeping rants out of all the other forums also helps keep a distance between conversation and venting, keeping the other forums calm.
