  • That's it - I'm wearing earplugs when tradeskilling!!!!

So I'm sitting in Shadow Haven doing my combines of MTPs and enjoying a rather nice success rate - great - I should make some nice plat in the bazaar when I go to bed.

Then the idiots start rolling in. (Mind you I've got a C3 that I paid for as an INT buff ticking off of me as all of this is happening)

Idiot_01 shouts - were can I buy cats eye agates?

NP - I happen to have the SH tradeskill list in front of me -

    Me /ooc - Adinson Allonode neg 11 pos 634

Idiot_01 shouts - were can I buy cats eye agates?

NP - it came within a few seconds of my /ooc - he had probobly been in the middle of hitting the button.

Idiot_01 shouts - were can I buy cats eye agates?

Hmm, maybe he missed my /ooc?

    Me /ooc - Adinson Allonode neg 11 pos 634

Idiot_01 shouts - were can I buy cats eye agates?

At this point others are trying to tell this guy were to find the cats eye agate merchant - three different people have explained it in a rather nice spread of ways - even someone who was here for the first time could find these things now.

Idiot_01 shouts - were can I buy cats eye agates?

Now I'm REALLY anoyed - I just want to do my baking.

    Me /ooc - Adinson Allonode neg 11 pos 634

Ahh, blessed silence - he finally saw it.

Idiot_01 shouts - were can I buy cats eye agates?

/ignore idiot_01 - should have done that in the first place - sigh.

idiot_02 tells you - can you show a fellow SK were I can find the echo cavern spells

OK, no prob - the poor guy probobly went into the wrong half - did it myself several times - so I give him directions on where to find the secret enterance and were to go from there.

idiot_02 tells you - I can't find it - can you show me?

Sigh - ok, it's poorly done - np - tell him to meet me at soulbinder - he actually shows up in less than 30 seconds. Show him secret enterance and give him full instructions on were to go and how to get there - start heading back to my oven.

idiot_02 tells you (not even 5 seconds after I've left) Still can't find it - can you show me?

/em furrows his eyebrows, looks out of corner of eyes towards direction idiot_02 was left. /Tell him yet again and then ignore idiot_02.

Idiot_03 shouts - Excuse me, but would anyone be nice enough to tell me how can I get SH faction?

Ahh, this can't be an idiot - must be a real newby - so I /ooc where to find the trade commissioner and the barbarian (didn't have the dwarf info at finger tips but that would be enough). There is a pause for a few minutes and then...

Idiot_03 shouts - I can't find the barbarian - what water is he near?

OK, np - that was my bad - /ooc that he's behind the door on the wall of the soulbinder by the big pool with the nexus gate.

    Idiot_03 shouts - Still can't find him

/em grinds his teeth and starts beating his head against stove.

Now the others start giving him even more detailed directions - door counts, /locs, grid coordinates, map locations - EVERYTHING - great, he's being taken care of, not my problem anymore.

    Idiot_03 says - Hail Nidalap

Dear god no - he's found me - and I was going to cast invis on myself too.

    Idiot_03 says - I can't find the barbarian

    /em cries
    /em weeps
/em leans against wall banging his fist on it - why me, why oh Cazik Thule why me?!?

I say - OK, follow me

Maybe something happened to despawn the barbarian - maybe there was a bug or something stupid. I go to the room that he's always in - yup, there was something stupid alright - Idiot_03. I explain how you have to go behind the counter and the location of the guy in the bazaar you give the crap to less my baking be disturbed yet again

/auction WTS misty thicket picnics 10pp each - great stat food for all classes - stacks with all equipment, buffs and stat drinks

Idiot_04 tells you - can clerics use them?

Idiot_05 tells you - 10pp a stack is too much for just food - I can get bread for 1pp a stack.

    Idiot_06 shouts - cn n e 1 p-lvl me?

    /em SCREAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's it - when I go back there tomarrow, I am going anon, turning invis and turning off every channel I can!

The rest could be frustrating, I know, but this one may be an honest mistake. I had almost the exact same thing happen to me in PoK the other day. Someone /shouted a question, I /ooc'ed the answer -- and he started repeating the question. Another player pointed out that the asker may have had his OOC chat turned off. So I /shouted my answer, and he thanked me and went on his merry way.

See this is what happens when you don't roleplay. Now if you were acting like you followed Thule. You could have merely not answered anything he was saying or was asking about. If anyone got upset, its just "Cazic Thule doesn't like me helping the weak, or something like that.". Not nice, but it works.

        Ahhh...

Cigarskunk has pointed out why I have stopped helping people.

        1) It almost never works
        2) They always want more help then you want to give

        and the biggest one

        3) By voulnteering the tiniest bit of info, you are now their PERSONAL CONTACT, for the time until they find what they need, and possibly afterwards.

If doing the /ooc once doesn't work I usually ignore them, so many players out there are so lazy and annoying that it is not worth the hassle

LOL - I'm not an arse in RL, I just play one in EQ.

Sadly, I'm just too nice and helpful in general - just the other night at the Home Depot I ended up carrying over 100 pounds of lumber to the register for some lady who couldn't find a shopping cart - everyone in my guild thinks that my troll SK is "sweetest thing" - sigh.

              My opinion EXACTLY, Lil.
Many times I'll see someone asking a question in /ooc, I'll answer them, then suddenly they're telling me constantly wanting more and more and more info and/or wanting me to do something for them. It gets annoying, so I've stopped even trying to help in this situation.

I have zero patience nowdays, like others in this thread I have "helped" only to get burned in time or just plain aggravation.

                  /nod Bennan

I often throw a single /ooc or /shout response (I try to match the channel of the request, but sometimes just ooc) ... but repeating the questions pretty much says to me *Going to be problematic person* and I just let it drop ... tells I try to be nice about, but the "show me" generally just gets a no if I'm busy ... two "show me"s pretty much ends my help.

I'm happy to help people - throw locs, vendor names, routes, recipes, and whatnot, when I can. You start making it *hard* on me, problematic, or trying to get me to take on more of your burden than I've stated I'm willing to help with (ie, show me repeatedly after I say no, etc), you lose.

I've done the newb1 thing many times, except for the incessant spamming.

The way it works is like this. I get on my Trader and turn off all channels. I turn the monitor off and go to bed. In the morning, there is a log of /tells, things that people said locally, annoying local /random, a bunch of "character saved" notices, and sometimes GM notices. I can easily sift through the /tells and judge whether any are worth following up.

I then log on to my main character and forget to turn on any channels. I'm merrily cruising around asking the odd question on /ooc. After a while I wonder why it's so eerily quiet out there. Doh /smacks self on head. I turn on the chat channels.

                          Been there, done that.

That is just not fun, I started filtering instead... so I didn't have to turn chat channels off, and could ignore the spam.

Tells in a separate window to be answered the next day etc.

I have to say that Cigars' newb just had OOC off, maybe even had shout off, and was just a minor idiot. Otherwise he would have stopped asking after the second or third time.

                            nah....

Actually, on my server, that is the typical way Shadowhaven is. If I've got a very limited amount of playtime, or I've really got a good streak going with the RNG, I turn all of my channels except guild off, and go AFK. I feel less guilty about not helping people if I don't know that they need help in the first place.

Yeah, it's not the *nicest* thing to do, but I figure, nice and helpful 90% of the time is still pretty good.

On the other hand, it's amusing to see 3 characters sitting in front of the jewelcraft vendor, all AFK, and yet still standing up every couple of minutes to cast spells.

So, my druid was sitting at one of the pottery wheels in the Plane of Knowledge last night throwing a few large bowls. Someone /ooc'ed, "Want to buy a port to Steamfont!"

While I was pondering the concept of buying a port to Steamfont in the PoK when there's a nice book portal just a short distance away, my druid stuck a whole stack of large bowl sketches in the pottery wheel and hit combine!
