At least FG is central and accessible.

Why must brown algae only be sold in cobalt scar? KOS to the revolting ice rats who infest thurgadin, my only method of getting coldain velium tempers for my cultural smithing is to pay some extortionist...err, druid/wizard to port me there, or spend a half hour running.

You could always ask in the tradeskill market section for your server, or your server's tradeskill channel, or even the serverwide one.

You are more likely to find somebody willing to port you if you don't call them extortionists. Just be upfront that you are a tradeskiller, and really don't have money to spare for a donation. most of the people in the channel understand, and a favor given now may be worth a favor received later.

If a Wizard is giving you a translocate though... give them 2pp it costs about 1.5pp for a wizard to cast most translocates...

I am more likely to give a TL than a port, becasue a TL is minimal interuption of what I am doing.

Yes, and if it costs you 10k to make an item, sell it for 10,000.5.

Most people I know think tradeskillers 'have' money.

Thats what bugs me about people begging for ports. "I'm on a CR, I have no donation". Well friend, your level 50+, your corpse has a 3 hr timer, and Bazaar bank is a 2 minute walk.

I value the difficulty of getting to the level to port someone, and my time, as much as I value the time it took me to get to a decent level in tradeskills.

I do have money, but I'm not forking it over to some leech who feels they have me over a barrel in the name of inter-class dependency.

Please take what I say next with a grain of salt. While the above quote inspired my response, its not really targetted at the person who said it.

I've played both sides of the game. I've leveled a Druid to 54 and a Warrior to 62. My Druid was my first character. And I have to say there is nothing more annoying than people who think you should drop what you're doing to accommodate their desires solely because you happen to be a certain class. I've gotten tells from half way around the world from people who think I should just pop in and pick them up and take them where they want to go because their time is too important to waste on the boat.

Their time is important, my time is not? What, Druids are second class citizens not entitled to enjoy their play time as they wish? Hmm, I don't recall seeing that in the EULA.

Even when I've been porting for cash I've gotten into long drawn out arguements with people who seemed to think that 10pp was horribly excessive. Well, what can I say, if avoiding half an hour of your time wasted on the boats is not worth 10pp all I can suggest is that you either level your own Wizard/Druid or take the boat. Don't expect me to go out of my way to accommodate you just because you want me to. I don't pay my $13 a month to be the server taxi and not even get tipped for the privelege, thank you very much.

Some people seem to think getting a port is an entitlement. Its something the other player owes them for some reason. Its not. You want to ask for a favor? I suggest you either ask very politely or be willing to pay for it and accept the fact you may receive no as a response. No one owes anyone else a favor unless they decide they do.

I have run my Warrior all over the game. Most of the time it was without sow, jboots, or run3. It was time consuming. It was annoying. But it was one of the restrictions of my class, so I dealt with it. When I could get a port, I would get a port. Usually I paid for the service because it was a convenience to me. Sometimes I got a favor from a friend who was nice enough to help me out. However, I always accepted no as a response, after all I was asking a favor.

Frankly, I bless the PoK portals as a god send.

Thanks Glatius, I hate being the only one on that side of an argument.

I also have leveled my non porting Monk, only to level 52 though. I have walked without sow all over norrath.

If I am going to hunt in DL, I wait at the Scion. If I can't wait, I donate for an x-locate for the saved 10 minutes.

If I need to get to WL, I ask in OOC in the nexus, and donate 30pp for the port.

Time is money, and I respect that on both sides of the spectrum.

Porting is a service. If you dont like the charge, dont use the optional service. Walk, use a boat, use a scion, and now (thank karana) you can use a book.

If saving you 20 minutes of time isnt worth 20 plat to you, then spend the 20 minutes. There are plenty of people who like to pay for ports. I havent shouted "PORTING FOR CASH" since level 29, and I have always made good money just listening for shouts while in the Nexus, Bazaar, or PoK.

People who do not have some kind of Class-Defining , Attention getting ability, like Enchanters, Clerics, and anyone who can SoW/Port, just doesnt realize. You are not the only one demanding my time and mana.

When I port you, assuming I can gate/port back to where I started from, that is still a decent amount of time taken. I have to find you, group with you, cast a 20 second port spell, zone, wait for you to zone, memorize my port home, give you the SoW you are going to ask for, cast the 10 second port home, zone again, and be out a large amount of mana in the process.

You will forgive me If I dont want to do this every couple minutes out of the goodness of my heart, for a total stranger.

I donate for rezzes (I pay very well, and I provide transportation).
I donate for KEI, and Mana Vials.
I expect worthwhile compensation for my efforts, time, and mana as well.

Which isnt to say that I *ALWAYS* charge. If I see someone ask literately, for a good reason (like a CR, or something in-character), then I will often group with them, and port them where they need to be. If they want to drop a few coins on me, that's ok But I don't ask.

                        I refuse to pay anymore

I won't pay for any more ports from Druids or Wizards..........because I don't ask them. After too many times not being able to find a porter inzone (I didn't know how to use the ports channel ops: ), I got used to walking to the zone edge. I've certainly gotten to know my way around Norrath! And now I have POP so the books are my preferred way to travel.

(On the other hand, if a druid/wizard I am grouped with or is in my guild wants to port us, I'm down with that.....he/she is going someplace he/she wants to be and I'm just along for the ride)

Just think of it this way, you aren't paying for their mana, you are paying 10pp for them to wait for you to find them, cast a spell, zone, wait for you to zone in (to give you the tip), zone back, med the mana back, and resume what they are doing.

Even the people that say, I heal for free, or I buff for free, aren't taking into account you may DO it for free, but would you cross a zoneline to do it?

You might also want to carry a stack of "small portal fragments" on you. As a wizard, I will translocate almost anyone for free if they provide the fragment. If I am feeling ornery, I may even tell people that I don't have any on me (and if there was a guild raid the night before it may even be true).

Portal fragments are a required component of most translocates--the only ones that do not require it are bind, GFay, Tox, NK, DL, and Nexus (and in-zone decession). As the fragments are only sold in the Temple of Solusek Ro, they are a hassle to replace. if you can provide me with the component, you get to ride for free. I have been known to turn down 100pp for a translocate because the player didn't have a fragment.

Just as I would never ask a cleric for a free Aegolism, or an enchanter to pay for the gem for a vial of mana, there is no reason to expect a wizard to pay for the components for a translocate.
