Ahh, scariest 2 hours of my life!

Overstatement, but it was scary.

I was brewing as usual, minding my own business... when suddenly I went LD.

Knowing my Corking device was in there I was very quick to log back on... or attempt to.

Turned out the server had crashed.... half an hour of panicing thinking the Corking device was in the still... and they bring server back up.

I log in, and sure enough, no corking device... and to top it off I'm missing a malt and a soda water!

May have been missing a cask too, not sure on count of them. Luckily all my liquidised meat was in order, must have put half the ingredients in, hehe.

Before I can petition I see a serverwide message similar to this:

Please petition if you were killed due to server crash and you will be ressurrected. We're sorry but no experience or items will be restored due to the rollback.

You know how scary seeing that was? Maybe a blue diamond is nothing to you, but to me that was a serious loss.... a previous post describes the difficulty I had in attaining it.

So I go about my business sobbing quietly to myself, and petition anyhow.

Another hour, and nothing, then a GM says: I'll have that corking device back to you in a Jiffy.

So the gods aren't always silent, and my fear was unwarranted. But man they should clarify what items they wont restore and what items they will, I was scared shiftless, hehe.

I feel your pain, Del.Lucky for me I was only smacking the crap out of some owlbears instead of skilling away. Wonder if he dropped that perfect pelt . . .

If you had an item BEFORE the rollback, (ie. you got your corking device last week) they will give it back to you. If you just made your corking device right before the rollback, then you wouldn't get it back, as the crash means they have no way of verifying you ever had it.

Try fighting an epic mob in fear (BG) gettign him down to about 2pct health and have the servers go down. The roll back we got did nto go back far enoguh and i was missing hte itme i needed to hand to him But the GMs heard our call and i go tth itme back. Just had to go kill the frickin golumn, again. Server crashes suck, WHy cant they warn us when the server is gogin to crash, OR when Bobo the Wounder Orc decides to trip over the plug

Because a server crash is not predictable. Can you predict when your computer will lock up for some unknown reason? I sure can't. Neither can they.

You must be Tunare folks! I feel your pain ... though I was fortunate, just came home and found it locked, only delaying feeding my addiction, rather than worrying about loss of life or property in-game (as happened last time -- had crashed while I was in the middle of the nicely broken and currently empty shardwurm cave ... which would promptly respawn on reboot with six blue shardwurms who decidedly don't like me .... Fortunately when I logged in I found myself back outside the caves. (Phew!)

GM's in chat room were saying they tripped over the power cord, hehe.

I think a lot of servers have been going down latey...we've had several server crashes/locks lately on The Rathe as well...

I think it's funny that everyone always thinks it's only their server. =)

Why does it always seem that when they have these crashes, the server can't remember the XP you got, can't remember the skill ups you got, can't remember any items you made or looted, but the server can somehow remember that you used your plat and components and doesn't give them back to you?

well my theory (and bear with me, it may be far simpler than it actualy is) is that every so often you see Character_Name_01 is saved.
so perhaps all characters are saved at the same time and that time dictates the rollback?

just like any other game or program, untill it is saved to the computer (or in this case, the server) it is all in the regular memory that is used to do things normaly.

My teachers explained it to me, I have 512 ddRAM, that RAM isnt used as a permanant memory, the RAM that is actualy bult in and associated with the hard drive is the RAM that my files get actualy saved to. When you are working on a program, that program is using your regular RAM to run and process what you are doing, if you dont save and the comp crashes, it's all gone, but if you save it to disk (hard drive) then it will be there up to that save point when you get back to it.

Sony probably has some sort of auto save set up, lets say every 5 to 10 minutes, and that determines our roll-back.

Saves every time you loot - that I know for sure. Server crashed and I was ML. I kept all my exp but my husband and others in the group... muahahaha! They were *not* happy.
