i often accept stuff that needs farming in trade. I work on a bunch of the tradeskills. If they wanna start bartering, i'll often ask for silks, blocks of ores, and other misc components. Plus cash of course.

Since I rarely sell except for when I want to clear stuff out of the bank, I rarely will accept anything other than plat. Only thing I hate about the "I'll give you my pile of junk I can't sell for your one item" people is that they don't seem to understand the concept of getting rid of junk without adding more junk to the pile. I'd probably say no even to the Windblade + plat guy only because I don't have a use for it.

I was so happy the other morning... had just finished making some of the old school Koada'dal cultural (5 peieces 1 imbued, 4 unimbued), dropped it on my vendor in the bazaar and went off to read and do errands for a while. Got back to two tells in my tell window
someone u there?
me AFK I'm by the stables heading towards the arena.
someone make you a deal on all ur cultural.
me AFK I'm by the stables heading towards the arena.
Look over to the trader window
someone has purchased Koada'dal Mithril Greaves for (2500).
someone has purchased Koada'dal Mithril Cloak for (2500).
someone has purchased Koada'dal Mithril Pauldron for (2000).
someone has purchased Koada'dal Mithril Vambraces for (2000).
Yes, I don't care for haggling too much. The last time it happened I offered someone a rez who died right near my group. Rezzed her, she thanked me and then asked
rezzee 'Hey, is that the elven cultural stuff you are wearing?'
me (in full Koada'dal Cultural blue armor) 'Why, yes it is!!'
rezzee 'Did you buy it or make it yourself?'
me 'Made it all myself!' <<-- Very proud of my armor!!
rezzee 'Really? How much would it cost for a full suit of that?'
me (After calculating it while keeping group alive) 'My full price would be about 25000, so I guess I'd sell a complete suit for 20000.'
rezzee 'Wow, that's quite a bit...'
Conversation continues back and forth for a bit, I explain that I'm a casual player and therefore I price my armor based on what my time is worth to me. She thinks that she can get a better price in the bazaar, so I encourage her to try (because she can if she is patient or lucky and I know this) and wish her the best of luck. Altogether a pleasant encounter. As it turns out she got her suit for FAR less than what I would have charged her... which is good all the way around.
I've caved in a few times when talking to people who gave me a not so good deal, and quickly got sick of it. So for the vast majority I just remain AFK as a merchant, and I don't respond to offers in tells unless they are capitalized and punctuated (typoes don't count, they are easily spottable), sensible, and use real words. When people ask me why my prices are high I just stick with the truth, I *AM* a casual player, and my time is worth a lot to me. There is nothing I can make that other people on my server can't, so if you want cheap prices, go to the ones who live online and have the time and money to throw away. Leave me to craft and hunt in my own time, for my own enjoyment.Gillin Whisperfoot

"because it just amazed me how many people would carry on a one-sided negotiation with me at 4am while I was tucked up in bed."
Even funnier are traders who clearly ARE at their keyboards, but won't talk to you.
I sell a lot of Blessed Fishing Rods, and now that the days of me being the lowest price by a mile are over (I always sold at 1500pp during the POTC craze, sold out quickly all the time), I will usually price my new fishing rods to equal the lowest price for those currently selling. I figure I'm not undercutting, but I won't necessarily have to wait for others' 9 or 10 poles to sell before mine have a chance.
Anyway, there's this one guy who HAS to have the lowest price. He just keeps dropping his price if anyone equals his. Several times we've gone through these silly cycles of him dropping his price, and me setting mine to equal his. Many times I've sent him tells, saying this is silly, we WILL have the same price, better to make it 1100pp, instead of some stupidly low price. He NEVER responds. He usually logs off, but one time, he set his price to the "stupidly low" price I quoted (still without talking to me), so I bought his stock. THEN he sends me a tell about "Good, now I can go do something else". My response was, if you had actually TALKED to me an hour ago, we could have reached the same deal, and you would have had ANOTHER hour to do something else. That was the last time he talked to me =)
Now we're back to the silly price-dropping, then he logs off =)

Yep, that's the right attitude to have. Similar to my experience with Nature Walker's Behest (55 DRU pet spell). It's a worthless pet, but I want it just to have a complete spellbook (pre-PoP, it's one of only a few I need). Anyway, I don't want it THAT bad. So when I see someone auctioning it, I always send them a tell and offer 2kpp. They always respond it's worth 7-10kpp. I then explain about how worthless it is, and that to me, it's worth 2kpp. But I also ALWAYS mention that if they wait, they probably will get someone to pay a lot more for it, just not me. Have made a few friends from these conversations, and everyone goes away happy.
And I still don't have Nature Walker's Behest! LOL, I can wait.

afk conversations
Just another thing to go in the museum of afk conversations.... coming back to see the story of a person agonizing over a purchase. all the results of a negotiation but none of the hassle.... i.e.:
necmagenc tells you: i'll give you 10k for the haunted robe
you tell necmagenc: Sorry, I am A.F.K. (Away From Keyboard) now
necmagenc tells you: you there?
you tell necmagenc: Sorry, I am A.F.K. (Away From Keyboard) now
necmagenc tells you: you there?
you tell necmagenc: Sorry, I am A.F.K. (Away From Keyboard) now
necmagenc tells you: tell me if you're there? i'll give you 9k and a sword worth 3k easy for the robe
you tell necmagenc: Sorry, I am A.F.K. (Away From Keyboard) now
necmagenc tells you: i'm gonna get it made from another person when i get the ingredients, just thought i'd give you the chance to sell it to me so i don't have to waste the time
you tell necmagenc: Sorry, I am A.F.K. (Away From Keyboard) now
necmagenc tells you: ok i'll give you 10k plus the sword and a decaying bone idol. plz it's all i have!
you tell necmagenc: Sorry, I am A.F.K. (Away From Keyboard) now
Then a quick look up at the trader window:
necmagenc has purchased 1 Robe of Haunted Dreams for 15000 PP
gotta love the bazaar!

Yeah, I deal with the same crap all the time because I refuse to play alts, and as such don't have a mule. So my main that everyone knows is a smith is always the one in the bazaar, and everyone seems to think I'm always there. So lots of 1 sided conversations have occurred =P
I'm fairly flexible on trades, as long as its only 1 or a couple of big items, if its from a lower level player I know has scrapped together an offer for something they can really use, its something I or a friend needs, etc. But if its something useless or something hard to sell I always say "no".
People that want me to do combines for them are the worst =P I have a system I have set up, and I refer people to a web post with all the ingredients, recipes, trivials, instructions, my policies, etc, and yet the people come back to me trying to work out something different. I can't count the times people want to hand me 3 BDs and a few sunlights and have me click combine on a cultural BP LOL. What's worse is the attitude they get when I tell them I'm not interested, as if I'm losing out on some great deal, and they can go get someone else to do it easily. =P
AFK in trader mode is my definite favorite way to play the market.
