i have separate windows for different chats.
I have one just for tells, but i miss a remarkable number of tells when in conversations with multiple folks, and i only notice when i'm tabbing through reply-to names and see one i didn't know i was talking with ><
I have one for guild chat, that also has ooc/auc/shout (but those are usually turned off unless i specifically need them on), but i am notorious for responding to folks 20 minutes after they said something in guild chat (there are not many folks online during my playtime so it's not unusual for 20 minutes to go by without using guildchat, since whomever is online is usually in a group together).
I have a few other windows to cut down on spam in my main window. basically i watch to see what's filling the window, if i can turn it off and not miss it, i do. If i do need to see the info, but not constantly, i move it to its own window (spell casting spam: I only need to see "Nasty_Caster begins to cast the GATE spell" or "Gandel begins..." to see if he's still awake).
But even with all that, it's insane how much i miss, and i'm not doing anything in RL when i'm actually hunting.
I say all this, because i hate being ignored more than just about anything else. selectively ignoring things i say makes me battier than just ignoring everything. however i do it too, completely unintentional on my part, so i try to ask folks directly, "If you don't wish to answer, please say so and i'll drop it. Otherwise, you are getting spammed with my question until you give an answer!" Even knowing this is a cultural thing, to me it is unacceptable to be completely ignored, but it is perfectly acceptable to say "I will not answer that question". Are there cultures in which saying directly, "I won't answer", are really really bad but completely ignoring things is fine? bleh ><
