Erm, this was gone over in detail over on the old boards when someone attempted to troll and start an argument about the need for a fishing forum. Before folks jump out of the woodwork to defend their craft:

A close look at various recipe pages shows that fishing skill is used in the PoTC quest to make a blessed fishing rod; zone-specific fish are needed for several other quests (including one of the Coldain Prayer shawls), fish of all sorts are used in MANY baking recipes; one zone specific fish must be brewed to make a special tanning agent for one of the velious leathers; the bones from many fish are used to make extremely long range darts that monks enjoy using for difficult pulls; etc., etc.

Fish and the fishing skill have many uses in-game ... on top of being enjoyable for some of us.

Also used pottery:

Zone specific fish are used for Crucibles of Escape and Faithstones and Spiritstones.

Fishing skill itself must be around 177 to "prepare" the fish., depending on the recipie.
