Not exactly a rant, but I started playing Stromm a few nights ago, and aside from the fact that it isn't named Rufis (I'm sure Rufis won, but the devs just didn't want to admitt it) I highly reccomend it for anyone who wasn't around when EQ first started, but do it quickly, before there are too many high levels and mudflation starts to make newbie attainable gear too horrible to wear. It is the closest thing I have felt to the way it was when it all started in a long time.
If you are the type that likes to walk uphill, both ways in the snow, just so you can get beaten in the head with a rock, cause by jimminy thats what we do for fun, etc. This server is for you.
I personally have been two boxing a warrior/cleric combo, and having a ball. They are level 8 atm, and my cleric is at 107 smithing. I made her a human because she is a smith, and started off exping in innothule swamp with my (froglok) warrior. I chose it for several reasons, first of all there are LOTS of mobs there, far far more than when I started my first (troll) warrior on Fennin, so there are lots of exp mobs. Second is the fact that my first character was a troll, so I wanted to try it again. There are also zombies that drop rusty weapons and bricks of ore. I would load up on rusty weapons, take them to the forge, sharpen them, melt them down, and try to make sheet metal from them. It took all night, but I got my skill to 31 that way.
By the end of the second day I had both my characters to level 5, in full banded, and had taken the trip back to freeport to forge him a seafarers cutlass (7/23 1hs non-magic...no one can enchant ore yet, and I certainly couldn't kill seafuries for sea foam for tempers even if I could find someone who could). But even so, at level 8, in full banded and wielding a non magic sword I am still far better equipped than most people I have run in to. I think I have single handedly gotten at least 10 people to start smithing, just by telling them yes, I made it, when they examined me, and then telling them how.
The bad thing about Innothule swamp now is that there is lots to get you 1-4, but very little to get you above that without putting yourself in the way of Burly kobolds, who will eat you up fast. 5-7 it's had to exp there. I went back to EC. at 6-8 I did orc1, and probably will be back there again when I log on next.
It's not quite the same of course, you can't lose exp, or your body before level 10 now, and PoK books make ports unnecessary, but I'm having much more fun than I have had in a long time. I know many will say well, just don't twink your characters, but it's not the same, not even close. The newbie zones are full, everyone is naked. I am getting some astonished looks myself, and I am in banded. I never though banded would be uber again lol. (it won't be for long though, I think Cypher has started the planes, not positive, so they already are well above lowly banded mail)
As long as you don't feel the need to beg anyone for anything (you can try it of course, but you probably won't like peoples responses), you will have a good time I think. Don't be too attached to KEI either. I don't think there is a single enchanter with it yet.
You will want to start soon though, I have already seen at least one level 60 ranger /boggle, and the servers Uber guild seems to be a guild named Cypher, most of the ones I have seen non anon are 40+, very very few under 30 still so the server will age pretty quickly I think.
