Hehehe, I helped some one with this over the weeked. Had them stand back way back (Comon a lvl 45 Druid isnt going to be able to do anything when they spawn) I died 3 times thanks to others spawning the death squad on top of me and when I did make them spawn all you were hearing was me shouting was Death Suqad to *insert zone I was pointed to either Kael or GD* The funny was I was training like 5 or 6 of them to GD and some one ooc's me and
Says: Soriab do you know you have 5 Giants following you?
Reply: Yes I know =) Training them to GD right now. Thanks though.
All said and done I got him to pop for the youngster, Yes I say youngster at lvl 45 she will not be able to get the groups in Velks to get the threads shes going to either pay for looting rights if some one will let her or shes just going to have to wait till she is 50+ cause people in that zone will not group with you unless you are 50 minimum and then they wont let you get off the ground floor till 52 or 53, Never ask for Tents. The will laugh and riddicule you unless you are 55+.
All said and done I lost 10% of 54 cause there wasnt a Cleric available only a pally with 50% rez. But some is better than none I guess.

Actually, at lvl 40, my druid has her 7th shawl.
To number 4, she collected everything herself.
For the fifth, she did the wurms by herself (sometimes with a little help from friends as it did take an awfully long time to root/nuke them). The threads she got in a few evenings by /ooc'ing in Velks that she wanted to loot threads. Once she joined a group for a little while (a monk was being PL'd), otherwise she sat outside the group and helped heal a bit.
For the sixth, she got the manticore mane, beard and whiskers herself, the hairs were acquired while fishing in CS for cod, occasionally /ooc'ing that she wanted to loot them.
For the 7th, I was given the blood, and a nice monk friend helped in CS :D

Aye. Once I get this 4th shawl, I'll be waiting until 50th (dinged 40 this weekend playing with stalag terrors and spiders in CC /cheer) or so to work on the 5th. Provided I can get a group there in Velks. /sigh
Do you know what this means? I'll actually be levelling instead of tradeskilling.
I don't know if I can handle this. It's too much.

I lost my 4th shawl on a corpse bug. /pout
I got all my items restored except the shawl, because I didn't realize it was missing!

If you haven't spawned the dwarf yet for the 4th shawl, charm a snow bunny/wooly rhino/mammoth/snow griffin, have it follow you to the ramp.
Use /pet guard here on the ramp. The animla will then turn towards either a)the nearest mob, or b) the spawn point for the death squad/dwarf. Makes things a lot easier.

Hehe I'm a Beastlord, I was using my warder for that. But the funny part is where we found him at.
Say you are looking down the ramp from the top headding to Kael. Well he wasnt in that area. Just a whole lot of Death Squad this day. I found him *forgive me I didnt write down the loc* to the SW of the ramp. Basically go stand at the south top corner of the ramp and angle about 45 degrees SW away from ramp to zone wall and run to the second tree just about. So for those looking for him. Hes not always out front in the ramp area.

Try to abuse murphies law, create a level 1 character the day before you go on a 2 week trip to hawaii, give the level 1 all your expensive items, make him kos to dwarves by doing some quests and leeching faction, run to ramp 10 minutes before your plane leaves, voila, your dwarf WILL spawn and kill you :).

LOL, Blaithin, I did that! Tried all the little tricks, charmed bunnies galore, charmed walruses, read all the how-to documents I could find... no Tanik!!
Following my pets' lead, I was cautiously poking around in the snow... Death Squad, run to Kael. Back out, find a new pet, repeat.
Finally I was reduced to running around click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click--click-click--click-click--click-click.... After about 10 Death Squads I finally hit Tanik! WOO HOO!! Just don't ask me where he was, cause I don't know.

Yeah, I'm doing the random-run-around-in-the-general-area-outside-hoping-to-Tunare-that-if-I-do-trip-something-it'll-be-the-Dwarf-not-the-Death-Squad routine.
Even set up a special hotkey for when I have to get my little Wood Elf butt in gear and run to KD as fast as my legs will take me.
Oh, it's going to be a fun night tonight. Hopefully tomorrow morning I'll have a better tale to tell, instead of the tale of running for my life to the zone, or using my snow bunny pet for interference as I run to the aforementioned zone.
You have been ambushed by Frost Giants!
"Quick Bun-Bun! Distract the Death Squad while I run to the zone! Bun-Bun? BUN-BUN! Aiiieeee!!"

Hehehe Dead Fluffy
As for not getting a group at 45 I got my 5 and 6 shawl in my 40's and went to velks a few times to get silks I then leveled a bit and soloed the glowing biles went back to velks to get the rest of the silks. I have found that late at night or early on the weekends the groups in velks want a healer any healer. I now have my 7th and have put number 8 on hold indefinatly need to level some more to get the parts. I have died too many times in ew to go back right now.

I did 4th shawl about 2 weeks ago. I used the pet trick, and worked pretty well. I had 2 chars I was doing shawl for, and got two Taniks in a row and no death squads. I consider myself very lucky considering it took all of about 5 minutes to do and I didn't die.

Did the 4th shawl a couple of weeks ago. The charming trick works well. I died a couple of times working out how to spawn the giants (and once when I fell down the side of the crevasse leading to Kael doh!). It took about 20 death squads to get Tanik, but I got him in the end :). I felt that charming tough mobs (mammoths, frost giants etc) was worthwhile cause they held up the death squad long enough for me to make my getaway.

There is a thread on this very topic over in the Quests forum. Khoren had this to say
One of my mules on my second account is a level four mage who exists SOLELY for this purpose. It is the only sane way to do this, especially if you need to do it for more than one person.
When I got there, two other people were running around looking for him. Obviously, this was gonna take forever, so I made the mage, PLed him to the level at which he could bind, then ported him over and mad-dashed for the Kael Ramp to bind. Not much more than an hour later, all three of us had gotten Tanik.
(I used my pony to outrun the squads after I got tired of killing them, which was very quickly, and they despawn very quickly. Be careful, though. Don't get people dead.)
I have heard of people using 2ndary characters to trigger the trap such as an ogre because they are dubious by nature.. so anyways dumb me is sitting here reading this thinking "Wow wonder what race mage he used that wasnt KOS" .. heh ... it finally dawned on me that it didnt matter what race he used. He would cast the pet, set it to gaurd, find the spot, run over to it. If he was killed *Shrugs* OH WELL! He would respawn back on the ramp and try again.
Of course this method only works with 2 people or if you have 2 computers and 2 accounts .. but still .. sure beats having 5 death squad bastards on you as you haul ass for Kael

Walruses!
They have enough hp's to last long enough for you to get clear, and you houldn't have to zone. Jboots was enough to get me far enough away the kds just stood there and despawned.

Figured I'd post since I've gone through the hassle of having to find this guy. This really requires the use of two to three accounts, depending who you're trying to get Tranik for.
1) Create a first level warrior, race doesn't matter, only deity, and that deity is Rallos Zek (the giants follow Rallos Zek, automatic dubious con). Get him out to Eastern Wastes, pretty simple since nothing will aggro him in GD on the way there, just watch those slopes. )
2) I've found a high level Mage is the best to have for the second part of this. Have him meet your newbie, and summon up an Ulthork with Monster Summoning. Why you ask? Since you can walk through monsters, the walrus has a nice box-shaped nose which when looked through from the other side, we've dubbed "walrus cam." Very easy for getting the newbie completely centered along a path.
3) Walk the newbie around and line him up with Ulthork and walk towards, make sure he's on a direct line with the mage pet. (PS - have the Mage set the pet to "guard here" and he'll face the nearest spawn point). Keep in mind, keep the Mage back a ways in case a death squad spawns. Once aligned with the pet, the Mage walks a ways in a different direction, lining up with the newbie again. Newbie walks along the original line until he meets up with where the pet is now facing. When those two points meet, you'll find a spawn, either death squad or Tranik. Once Tranik shows up, inform your friend and hail him until they show up (don't do any dialogue, just hail him). It'll stop him from despawning.
This method took us a while the first time, but now we have it down to being able to find Tranik in about 10-15 minutes, with no risk whatsoever. Any death squad spawned will stand about aimlessly as they're dubious to the newbie, and will despawn in about 3 or 4 minutes if not aggro'd. Any pet class will work, but the Ulthork method just makes it a walk in the park.
Then after your friend has gotten his letter, take your newbie to Kael, shouting LFG, and have fun goofing around with high levelers wondering how the heck a newbie made it to Kael and isn't dead. )
Hope this has been of help.

Heh, it took me 18 Kromriff Death Squads and four hours to finally locate that dwarf! By far, though, my worst shawl quest memory would have to be hunting those **** wurms in GD.
