A gnome can't gain skill in tinkering until they reach 16th level.
At 16th level, your gnome's tinkering skill will be 50. At that point, it's possible to skill up to 250.

So once you hit 16, you can go all the way to 250 without having to level again?
Just trying to clear this up for me, somebody told me last night I'd have to keep levelling to keep raising tinkering.

Yup. My 250 tinkbot is lvl 16 and if you added up all her 5 casting skills it would prolly be like 2. (Cast gate to get back from Gunthak twice).

Of course only a twink character can do that. There’s no way a level 16 gnome can ever earn enough money to reach 250 tinkering. Well, maybe if he or she sold enough spiderling silks in the bazaar, but it would take a really long time. Personally I don’t have a problem with that if that’s how you want to play your character. My level 20 gnome necromancer has 105 tinkering after a generous donation from my druid and a few backpacks full of porous mineral blocks from my shaman. I do hope to have him level some more some day. But when I get the urge to tinker I’ll happily accept donations from any of my other characters.
