Nice.

This would replace my charred guardian shield if I were high enough in level. But as a lowbie of only 31 levels, who am I to talk of higher level items?

As with most of the potted focus items, their value is in their focus effect, not in their stats.

I could see a cleric shaman or druid keeping that shield in their range slot for the +20% buff duration.

I couldn't see it being kept in any slot. Maybe transferred to the slot when casting, then stuck right back in the bag.

If you are the lvl needed to cast spells that can be effected by a lvl 4 effect (read lvl 61 - 65 ), then the stats on this shield are a joke

Note that the Level IV effect also covers spells downward. And so, it would be useful.

Hence i used the word needed. It would have made more sense to create a range of items, to match the range of effects, I, II, III, IV.

Yes there are people who arent 61-65, and yes they would benifit from a focus IV effect.

To stick a rank 4 effect on an item with stats this poor is punishing people who need the effect, i.e. ARE casting spells 61-65. This forces these people to switch out better items to benefit from the effect ( unless of course they are in a guild capable of taking down tier 3 mobs for items with Manapres IV, spell haste IV etc. In which case, they wouldnt want need these items in the first place )

If you need a rank 4 effect to extend your 61-65 buffs, and you have to switch items out, you are better off just swapping it out for a mage summoned runed mantle.

Or better yet, get a shawl 8 that has the same effect ( Zephyr of brell ) PLUS Ft3, AND stats that make it worth wearing.

Edit: forgot to close my brackets =x

Um yeah. Just go out and pick up the 8th coldain prayer shawl at your local walrus mart. Be fair. That item is extremely hard to get for many people. Not everyone has a bottomless bank account to pay for items they cannot farm themselves. I am a lvl 60 cleric with ok equipment and velium hounds would rip me a new one everytime. And I would love to have this little item in my ranged slot. Have a gorganta idol there now and this would be a much nice item.

Personally my range slot is my most flexible slot atm. I am thrilled that they made it so we can equip these in the range slot now. I am not bothered by the stats. Good effect items that are droppable seem to have only average stats. These stats are decent for a range slot item.

Now if it had been secondary only, as originally intended, I think we'd all be justifiably disappointed. As it is, I think this will be a nice little seller...

Melee types have been swapping primary / secondary / range slot items around forever. Completely depending on the group I'm in, the combat type we're doing, and the types of mobs ( and thier effects ), I may change my primary, secondary, and range items multiple times, sometimes multiple times in the same fight.

Yes, these don't have very good stats on them. Yes, they have FE IV on them that's needed for casting spells. But it's needed for CASTING spells. Swap it in when you buff to get one effect, swap back to your "regular" range item for combat, swap in your resist item if you need it... carry more than one of these and swap one for buffs, one for combat, one for DoT's... whatever.

Think it's too hard to swap items around in combat? Change your UI files, there are soooo many UI's out there now that let you swap items extreemly easily.

Still think it's too much effort? Sorry... I've been doing it for way too l ong to worry about ya.

These ROCK, if used correctly. That MAY mean changing your play style. That MAY mean dropping some stats from your current range item and / or rebalencing your gear.

Just because they are different doesn't make them "bad" or "useless". Just different.

Adapt and overcome.

When focus effects were first added, I bought our guild's only MGB cleric an Amulet of Insight (extended enh III). All I heard for the next month was 'I *LOOOOVE* that neck. thank you thank you' when we'd talk. This item will be used.

Yes, the attributes on this and the other crafted focus IV items are dubious at best.

That's not the point of them. The point is to get focus items into peoples' hands. These items mean that if you feel you need a focus IV item, you can get one without having to go camp something in a high-teir plane. It won't be as good as the dropped one, of course, but you can get one.

Some of the crafted items are better than others. And are harder to collect items for as well.
eg. The ceramic rod of storms, effect:anger of e'ci, which is 23% DD increase excluding aoes and 'uber' dragons and giants.
However, this item needs drops from Bastion of Thunder, not an easy place to get into, nm try to get the drops.

However, this item does seem to have an issue with it. That is, it requires 2 metallic liquids to make it. This is COMPLETELY unreasonable. Even though drops have been added to golems, its still rare, as in 1 every 3-4 hours of chain pulling. The valorium ring of gallantry, which is amazing, requires only one. GL getting that metallic liquid away from the melee, everyone rolls on this stuff now.

Bottomline, I wouldnt worry about this item, while (no matter what anyone says here) it WOULD be useful for all those that just dont have the time for the 8th shawl, it WONT get made. Simply for the metallic liquid.

Now ... the Gavel of Justice, THERE is a useful little item.

I honestly don't think we'll be seeing any of these for sale for a long time. Metallic Liquid drops way too rarely and the ring it makes is nicer to a lot more classes. People on Karana roll on the liquid since the rings are so nice.

I don't think the stats on these should be so great they you never want to switch them out, but they should be nice enough that they are appealing to wear while you are using the focus effects. Of course, I personally think they should change the look of some of these items so I'm not running around looking like I'm in newbie gear again (although I don't get asked for KEI nearly as much... )
