• Help with printing recipe pages.

What is your preferred method to print out the wonderful recipe pages from the site?

When I just click File, print, then it prints out the whole page, with all the buttons, background color, and it takes the printer FOREVER to print out one page

When I try to copy and paste into Word, It gets garbled and the spacing is horrid. (Using the baking Page as a specific example here).

I was able to copy and paste the PoK Tradeskill Supplies Page, and with a fair bit of work, The Halfling Cultural Tradeskills Page.

But Im having a devil of a time.

    And secrets to it ?

Personally, I just print the page complete with buttons and stuff...

it's not clean or pretty, and sometimes I loose an important line of text going across the page-break (that's why Gnomes invented pencils )

    /shrug

Recipes get updated often enough that printing out whole sections is getting to be quite a waste (looking at my copy of the baking page, printed on July 8th '01 and wondering how badly I need to reprint  )

      Hmm

What I generally do is go and highlight the recipe table then click file - print. When doing so I have an option to print just the selection (should be a radio button about 1/2 way down on the left). I generally get nice and neat printouts that way.

The other option is to print it out to a laser printer... or print it out draft quality, black & white only.

          Slimb,

Thats not a bad idea. The Tools & Implements chart fits exactly on one page.

Too bad baking won't. And Im sure tailoring won't.

            Angelsyn:

You are a genius. Switching quality to "Quick/Draft", and setting the color option to "Black And White" was a stroke of genius.

If you copy and paste it to an Spreadsheet format, like Excel, it works just fine with minor formatting. (resizing columns and rows)

Thats how I always print mine out.

I just highlight the text i wan to print, go up to file ,select print then check off the print selection button. That way you just get the text without the other stuff.

Yes, I highlight it and click "selection" as well when I print. Of course printing off a laser printer also is nice. <g>

Ok, tried to copy and paste into Excel, and it turns out the Baking Section is EIGHTEEN PAGES?

Jeez, is there a better way, other then just typing out commonly used recipes?

                        Lilosh,
I can get it to 13 pages simply by adjusting the sizing on the columns and rows.

You could shrink it down more by cutting out silly things like the excess of info on Fillets or Dough. Also with just some basic cut and paste you can put the 3 liners into one so that it sizes properly.

Watch for text wrapping and eliminate breaks forced by links like (foraged) and it should get down to a more managable size.

Also if you create a small column at the end and mark your most needed recipes (N font size 5, color white, column size .5) then you can Filter (Data, Filter, AutoFilter) on that column to show just those N's and voila! Only the things you need show up.

Sorry if this is to much info, I do spreadsheets in my sleep...

Yeah, get another computer and just look up the stuff online when you need it. You always get the latest recipe, you can look up the subcombines that are not on the page you printed, you can look up quests, etc.

A small laptop with just a web browser on it is just the ticket. I use an old Toshiba Tecra 8000 as my browsing machine, but you can get just about anything. Remember, you are not using this to play EQ, just to surf. You could probably get by with a 286 if you used Linux instead of Windows. Laptops have the advantage of a built in screen, but you can use another computer and a switcher to share a single monitor.

If you have a cable modem, then you can easily get a linksys firewall/router to share your connection. If all you have is a modem, then it is possible to connect both computers with a serial cable and share the connection you use on your EQ computer.

I just looked and saw a cheap laptop on ebay for 60 bucks. That is cheaper than ink catridges for your printer over the long run and definately far more flexible.

I copy and paste to Word, change all borders and shading to none, change all font color to black and change all font size down to 9.

Once Niami and Ngreth get the recipe database up and running I wouldn't mind seeing a downloadable (and frequently updated) recipe listing for my PDA I'll even volunteer to write the code to make it happen. *hint hint* Let me know what I can do to help.
