Steel Casings Question

I know these are sold on the merchant in PoI for approximately 45pp but my question is are they no drop?
I have heard conflicting reports and want to clear it up before I head out to buy them.

Steel casings are tradeable.

Of course, in true tinkering material fashion, they're not stackable.

It is an easy run for a monk to make. I had a friend with a monk. Gave him SoW and invis and set him on his way. He got to the vendor OK, bought a few, then came back. Without invis, he aggro'ed a couple, but with FD, they lost interest fairly quickly. There are some mobs in PoI who see invis, so monk is your safest "quick trip." Or, it's fairly easy to have a group fight over that way.

One group can easily fight their way over in a reasonable amount of time. An even better option than a monk flopping is to get a rogue with AA super invis, they can walk right up to the vendor and back without a problem.
