Total combines: 1421
Successes: 1360
Failures: 61
Failure rate: 4.3%
Total cost: 6400pp almost to the platinum
All combines were done with a Geerlok and with INT 290. None of the metals were enchanted.
Below is a breakdown of my skill path. Note that occassionally I did non-optimal combines because I wanted to minimize the number of trips to the gem merchant in case of trivialing a gem type in the middle of a stack.
Gold Fire Emerald: 74/80, to 202
Platinum Malachite: 384/400, to 217
Platinum Lapis: 76/80, to 219
Platinum Turquoise: 117/120, to 222
Platinum Hematite: 116/120, to 225
Platinum Bloodstone: 196/200, to 231
Platinum Onyx: 55/60, to 232
Platinum Jasper: 38/40, to 235
Platinum Star Rose: 58/60, to 237
Platinum Carnelian: 40/40, to 238
Platinum Star Rose: 38/40, to 240
Platinum Amber: 58/60, to 243
Platinum Jade: 130/141, to 250
Best run was in 227 to 231: 79/80 combines and 5 skill points. Worst was in 244: 33/40 before I got a skill.
Off to make my trophy now.

Guess my luck was all used up on the combines. Three attempts at the trophy tonight. First TWO :!: failed on the wheel. Third I actually got to fail in the JC kit. Server crashed shortly thereafter and no vendors in the bazaar to buy any more jacinths, so no more attempts for me. Bye bye 10k.
Serves me right for selling my spare artisan's seals when I thought that Baking was as high as I was gonna go.

How many of those were trivial combines? It seems unlikely that so many items would go trivial at a multiple of 20 attempts.

None of them were trivial combines. When I was one or two points away from trivial I would go ahead and move up to the next stone just so I wouldn't have a partial stack of trivial combines. Since I had the geerlok, all of the combines I was doing were "virtually trivial" so I was able to stay at or around the 5% failure mark all the way (even with malachite).

Made my trophy on the 5th try. Two failures on the wheel (at 200 pottery) and two in the bag (with a geerlok). Yay me!

Sorry, I completely glossed over the part where you did your total stats..
I posted those numbers because I , in my blindness, didn't see that you had already compiled the numbers.
My apologies.

That 4.3% failure seems pretty consistent.
For me going from 201-242
Tries 875
success 837
fail 38
Fail rate 4.3% :)
Cost me less than 1K in total as I enchanted my Plat so when I sold back to vendor I make 4pp profit on all success's
I only tried 2 main types which was Malachite to 218 and then
Camelian and the last 3 skills were all the gems I looted at Geos.
199 -> 250
260 wis +5% geerlok
total 1201 combines
1154 success / 51 fail ( 4.23% failure rate )
average skillup chance per try: 4.16% for total combine.
4.2~4.3 % should be magic number over 1000 combine maybe,
but skillup chance is quite different from 50/1400 of others.
do 255+ wis make porblem?
spme raw data, if you interested in.

I got NTCM3 tonight and did some jewelcrafting with my tradeskiller.
260wis, 108cha with amiable faction, and geerlock. went from 200 to 228 at a cost of 7820pp (rounded to the nearest platinum). May others have better luck than me.

All combines were with 229 Intelligence, 148 charisma and a Geerlok. All metals were enchanted. I started with about 850pp and ended with 1,400pp by selling back to the merchant in Thurgadin. Evidently the Thurgadin gem merchants don't have Wolf's Eye Agate. Maybe they're on backorder.
Longest dry spell was getting 206 105 successes on 111 combines.
Quickest skillups was 207 to 216 161 successes on 164 combines.

You would have saved yourself about 5k plat if you had enchanted bars. I think my costs from 192 -> 247 was under 2K. You get about 4-5p profit with each combine for enchanted plat bars.
Level 45 with a 220 int
KEI made the wait for mana much less painful

Not sure who you were talking to here, but if you can find an enchanter to enchant 1400 bars of platinum for only 5k, good luck to you. When KEI enchanters are making 3000pp per hour in the bazaar, asking one to enchant a single backpack will cost that much.
