  • Ack! Stupid SPOON!

Someone PLEASE explain the logic behind losing ALL OF YOUR FREAKING COMPONENTS when trying to combine them on a pottery wheel into the Artisan Seal?!??!?!??! OK - maybe losing them in the kiln I could understand - fire too hot, gems cracked, etc., but on the POTTERY WHEEL??!??! What - did I spin it too fast? Did all of the mounted gems fly off in different directions and get absorbed into the atmosphere? Or was my character simply too disgusted to pick the thousands of plat worth of components out of that sticky, ooey, gooey clay?!?!?!??

Don't even get me STARTED on my apparent inability to SLICE CAKE at 250 baking skill...

    ACK!

    Thank you for your time,
    Tiny

    Actually...

You'd be suprised at what can happen on a Pottery Wheel if you had ever done pottery IRL.

First off, yes, you can spin it too fast, and if the right pressure isn't applied to the clay and it isn't centered on the wheel right, it's not going to turn out even.

When actually throwing the piece it can end up too thick on one side, then too thin on the other due to the issue listed above. I've more then once accidently punched my fingers through the side of a bowl when trying to shape it.

Also there is the issue with water. Too much water will thin it and make the clay extremely slippery. Too little water will make it so it is abrasive and hard to work with, knocking the project off center.

Oh trust me, there is entirely too much that can go wrong on a pottery wheel...

RL Potter of 20 or so skill...

Rofl..... two good posts. Your explanation of pottery hazards was great, Jessamyn, but I'm not sure Tiny feels any better. Well maybe Tiny does feel better after a good chuckle.

Jessamyn Sunweaver, while I agree that the hazards you listed when doing pottery are quite real, I think that you're missing the point of someone taking a gem, which has been mounted in velium, and losing it just because something went wrong with the clay.

After all, if you wanted to make a bowl on your wheel and you descided to place a disk of solid gold with a large ruby in the bottom of that bowl, do you actually think that you could have something catostophic enough happen during the spinning process to rendure that gold and that ruby to be 100% worthless?

          Aye...

I can see where that can be an issue. Sadly since EQ looks at things differently, it doesn't take into account that you may be smart enough to throw the item first THEN place on the gems, nor have I seen it return items on failure that often...

Just figured I'd throw in a somewhat RL prespective from experience, sadly it won't always make sense due to how the game is coded.

Ah, but you forget ... this is VELIUM we're talking about ... in addition to being a very strong metal, didn't you read the footnote about Velium and Clay making a highly destructive substance, that only a skilled potter could control to not have utterly annihilate anything around it? You should be glad the pottery wheel is still standing ...

              just ignore the sleepy dwarf...

/em takes three balls of heavy clay and sticks four peices of velium into them, rolls them into a ball, soaks with gnomish firewater, adds silken cord that's been rolled in saltpeter and throws at kiln

/em dives for cover as kiln is reduced to smoking crator 5 feet wide and 2 feet deep

Ahh, worth every copper peice that was.

Minta's eyes go wide an' she jots down notes. ..an' sneaks away with all the other explosive balls. . .then dashes outta Thurgadin in a tizzy. . .Up to Nexus, down to Gfay, back to gnomiehome! She tosses metal sheets an' metal wire into the gnomie forge, wrapping them around the edge of a cake round, then stuffs the resulting apparatus into the range slot. . .an' makes several more. . .

An unsuspecting druid, captivated by gnomie charm, takes Minta to the gnomie pirate outpost in Iceclad Ocean. . .Soon a long trail of disturbed snow leads out from the empty outpost, down to the Snowfang shore. . .Several pirategnomies fall to gnolls, but there are enough still alive to form two solid ranks facing out to sea, each one standing with an apparatus at the ready. . .watching, waiting. . .

Out of twenty gnomish cannons, fourteen actually propel their missiles forward.

Hmm, am I the only person out there with good Snowfang faction? My guild dropped Lodi a few nights ago and our biggest problem was actually that folks kept getting aggroed by the gnolls while we were setting up - they're great guys those gnolls - I can't understand how someone could/would hose thier faction with them?
