Hey all, this is kinda a work in progress, but since I've just done 2 runs of 200 combines on this wonderful food (skill 176 to start, 8 skill ups, 56 total picnics made) And being one of low inventory space, I thought I'd make a guide on how better to juggle your bags, as well as speed up the process.

Ok, I'll try and make this as consise as possible with all the pertinant information

OK what you're gonna wanna do first is procure the following items:

Sewing Kit, Mixing Bowl, 3 10-slots bag, at least 1 large slot open on another bag, a file, a dairy spoon, and a cake round. the later three are all make via blacksmithing (which you're gonna need at least some skill in anyway)

Recommended Levels for Tradeskills
Brewing: 160+ (although the Jumjum spiced beer isn't trivial at this skill, I noticed very few failures)
Baking: 170+ (this will trivial and more the Jumjum spiced cake, which is not only the hardest component (other than the picnic itself) it requires the hardest to GET component)
Smithing: 50+ (you only really need to make steel boning, and the three tools)
Tailoring: 76+ (this is the trivial level for the picnic baskets, as the fastest way to get here is to make them, you might just wanna do that and save stuff... though it will take a lot of space)

Required Forages:
Vegtables
Fruit (in a far fewer quantity than the vegtables)

Uncommon Vendor items:
Jumjum Stalk (I got it from the short vendor in SH, first building on the right in the short quater)
Lettuce (same vendor)
Rennet - Granger Kenforth (in unlabelled building next to a smithy shop/forge, near the alchemy vendors in SH)

Looted Components:
Brownie Parts (drops from... brownies, Lfay and steamfont)

Alchemy components:
Eucalyptus
Fennel
Mandrake Root

Everything else should be easy to find at standard vendors.

OK, before we can get organized we have to do some prep work:
Note: I'm an iksar, so I got all my common stuff from Cabilis and the rest from the moon. I have forage, and veggies and fruit are common. Also this guide is based on doing 200 combines at a time, as I couldnt do more with my limited space

1) Ok first, buy 40 mandrake root, and combine 2 mandrake root in a tailoring kit until you have a stack of woven mandrake

2) Then buy a stack of water flasks, and 20 small bricks of ore, combine one of each and a file in a forge until you get a stack of steel boning

3) Combine 1 forged fruit and 3 frosting in an oven to make marmalade, repeat this until you have 18 marmalade (3 times)

4) Combie 1 brownie part and 2 frosting in a mixing bowl to make winter chocolate. do this twice (you'll have 2 winter chocolate)

5) Combine any egg but a snake egg (repeat twice for a snake egg) 1 flour, and 1 milk in a mixing bowl for clump of dough. You need 2 clumps of dough.

6) Combine 1 clump of dough, 1 winter chocolate, 1 frosting, 1 jumjum stalk, and your cake round in an oven. This will give you 20 cakes, you need 40, so repeat this once.

OK that will get all the prep work out of the way (you'll do many more combines as you go) its time to set up your bags. (I hope this comes out right)

Bag 1:
20..Barley...................20..Bottles
20..Hops.....................20..Jumjum Stalks
20..Spices...................20..Water Flasks
20..Jumjum Stalks.........20..Foraged Vegtables
20..Lettuce.................20..Fennel

Bag 2:
20..Milk.......................20..Rennet
20..Milk.......................01..Dairy Spoon
18..Apricot Marmalade...18..Loaf of Bread
20..Eucalyptus.............20..Frosting
20..Woven Mandrake.....20..Steel Boning

Bag 3:
20..Jumjum Cake...........20..Jumjum Cake
rest of this bag is open

You will have 8 slots open in bag 3, these slots are for the final components for Misty Picnics, as you need to put all those components in an oven, and the only other thing you use the oven for is slicing the Cake (/boggle) its best to keep them in the same container.

Basically you will start at the top of bag 1 and make all of the parts of the picnic in order:

Preparation for Final Combines:
Bag 1:
1) Combine first six components (barley, hops, bottle, jumjum stalk, spices, water flask) in a BREW BARREL for the jumjum spiced beer (or rum, I disremember which) Yield 10, repeat and stash in Bag 3.
2) Combine next four components (Jumjum stalk, foraged vegtables, lettuce, fennel) in a MIXING BOWL for the jumjum salad yield 10, repeat and stash in Bag 3.
Bag 2:
3) Combine first 4 components (2 milk, 1 rennet, dairy spoon) in a MIXING BOWL for the mature cheese yield 10, repeat and stash in Bag 3.
4) Combine next 2 components (1 apricot marmalade, 1 loaf of bread) in a MIXING BOWL for the marmalade sandwiches yield 12, repeat as necessary for at least a stack in bag three (keep track of the rest of course and use when you could)
5) Combine next 2 components (1 eucalyptus, 1 frosting) in a MIXING BOWL for the royal mints yield 10, repeat and stash in bag 3.
6) Combine next 2 components (1 woven mandrake and 1 steel boning) in a SEWING KIT for picnic baskets yield 10, repeat and stash in Bag 3.

Final Combines:
7) Next open bag 3 (at this point you should have the 2 cakes, and 6 of the misty picnic items in full stacks in there)
8 ) Combine 1 cake in an oven by itself for Slice of jumjum spiced cape yield 10, you need 2 stacks of these, so repeat 3 times (for 2 full stacks of slices)
9) Combine all 8 items (bottom 8 slots in the 3rd bag) in an oven.

When you've exhausted the picnic parts, repeat the entire process, you'll (at the end) attempted 200 picnics (assuming no failure, at baking skill 175, part failure was rare, I also have 200 blacksmithing, 99 tailoring, and 159 brewing failing anything other than the picnic itself was uncommon, like maybe once per 200 tries (actually only 40 tries of component making)

Now of course, the important thing: cost. Approximate cost, if you can get the forages and dropped components for free, is 230 plat (for all 200 combines total). That's at best prices.

Enjoy!

Poster's Note:
There are a lot of good guides for MTPs out there, stating the locations of where items are found. And those guides are very good as well. However, being an avid traderskiller myself, I can pretty much source out products on my own.

This guide, with the great bag suggestions, make this guide a very worthwhile read. It takes a while to prepare the ingredients, but I found that it has increased my efficiency immensely.

Personally I found it much better to buy or make one extra for each stack of precombines. I.e. 21 steel boning, 21 yeast and so on. As soon as you make one precombine the excess from the stack is gone and nothing remains but a stack of componants and your new items.

Also, I tend to make runs of 200 picnics 40 at a time, not 20. That is, Make 2 stacks of baskets, 2 stacks of beer, 4 stacks of cake slices, etc. Arrange these so that in each of 2 bags you have 2 columns of 4 ingredients. Something like this:

Bag 1:
20 jumjum spiced beer | 20 jumjum spiced beer
20 picnic baskets | 20 picnic baskets
20 mature cheese | 20 mature cheese
20 jumjum salad | 20 jumjum salad
(empty) | (empty)

Bag 2:
20 marmalade sandwiches | 20 marmalade sandwiches
20 royal mints | 20 royal mints
20 slices of jumjum cake |20 slices of jumjum cake
20 slices of jumjum cake |20 slices of jumjum cake
(empty) | (empty)

Now the real trick. Using the new interface where you can have more than two bags open at once (woot!) you place these two open bags on either side of the oven so that the oven is in between these two bags. Place one item from each row of the left bag into the corresponding row of the left column of the oven. Place one item from each row of the right bag into the corresponding row of the right column of the oven. Hit combine and you're ready to drop your picnics into your auto-equip area.

Also unless you're ready to do a session of about 2-3 hours to do 200 picnic attempts, don't buy full stacks of precombine ingredients. Just buy the necessary amounts and do the combines. For instance get 4 bottles, 4 yeast, 4 barley, 4 water, 4 spice and 4 jumjum to make 40 jumjum spiced beer if you want to do 40 combines of picnics. Then before getting any more ingredients make those combines. Instead of taking up 5 stacks it now only takes 2. Do this for all the combines and you can go however long you wish while running around Shadowhaven (which has all the vendor-sold ingredients in one zone) making as many or as few picnics as you like. It also allows you to do picnics with less available space.

Other picnic tips from a 250 baker:

Some people use woven mandrake to skill up tailoring. Buying woven mandrake when available is not only fewer steps, but significantly cheaper than buying the mandrake and weaving it yourself.

Ditto the jumjum spiced beer, steel boning and mature cheese. While you may not save money here, the steps saved makes buying this premade when available a real timesaver. And the price is still competitive.

You can also find marmalade sometimes for sale. Again, not a money saver so much as a timesaver and a supply augmentation. If you have problems getting fruit, this method could enhance your marmalade supply significantly.

Determine your break-even sell price so you can make money selling this wonderful renewable consumable. And remember how much work it was too. No point in selling your skill short.

Don't expect much in the way of yield until your reach very high levels of skill. At 250, my success rate is about 50% on MTPs.

Good luck and Bake On!

Great advice Ajia! I have been making upwards of 5 stacks of combines and putting 4 on a 2boxed alt to hold. But the idea of two bags full of stuff will speed things up.

Thanks!

Alyxia...

One small (minor) thing I noticed in your post. Jumjum is not uncommon in RV... there is an unlimited supply of it there in the druid guild area.

Think by uncommon she meant it's not readily available at your standard vendor which would hold true for the things she listed there... before pop jumjum, lettuce, and rennet was only available between two vendors (one in RV carrying jumjum/lettuce the other, in SH, carrying rennet) and they were not available anywhere else.

Now you can get rennet and lettuce in PoK in the area with the other baking supplies... the food stand at the druid farm in RV is still the only place to buy jumjum stalks.

Ajia,

You've got some great suggestions too! Great for the person that doesn't want to load up for 200 combines at one time.

However, I personally am a crazy tradeskiller, and doing 200 combines in a sitting is not unheard of. And buying a full stack of precombine ingredients prevents the constant running around to gather stuff every 40 combines or so, which I hate (I'm lazy also) :)

Mellen,

You're absolutely right about the Uncommon items. Take a note that this isn't my original post. I only editted the original poster's formatting and numbered the steps, to make it more readable from the original.

Hehe and I knew about the druid area in RV also...just that I was a bit "undiscriminating" in my younger days, and kinda trashed my merchant faction in RV. I still bank there on ocasion though. :)

As for what I do personally. I actually do make up extras, especially the picnic baskets and the jum jum beer. I use my sewing kit to hold extra stacks of jum jum beer and picnic baskets. Because jum jum beer is done at a brew barrel away from the oven, and I also need to make some extra stacks of picnic baskets, because I use the sewing kit to hold stuff.

You forgot, that you need eggs to make clumps of Dough, needed for the JumJum Cake :)

I do my smithing/tailoring (Picnic Basket making) in Thurg, because I am Ally to them, and you can get the expensive items, eucalyptus and mandrake and fennel the cheapest there.

I got to SH to get the rennet, and I do the rest in Rivervale, I'm not exactly friendly with them, but most of the stuff you buy there are the cheap stuff, plus while you are making stuff there, you can forage every 2 mins and collect more fruit/veggies for your next attempt.

I make 100 at a time cos that takes up 4 bags. :)

I always stack the bags as in Ajia's post for anything that requires more than 4 components (picnics, meat pies, mino hero brew, etc.) Also, after consuming a stack of each item, it's easy to swap the bags and have a new set of ingredients ready. It helps too to put the inventory so that the auto-equip area is right under the Combine button.

As for ruined merchant faction in RV, the bandage quest fixes that pretty quickly.

Using that I'm now allied with the merchants of RV.
